thanks, Dr Who Fan, but I can't see the badges - it is just a sign, as if they have been deleted...

Science isn't enough!
At 2.000.000.000 you get your last badge and then nothing.
And there could be more colours or badges of a different shape or something.

I mean, how to stay motivated?

We could do like the democrats do here in the USA and just raise the badge limits. If we doubled everything, the last badge would be at 4b. Of course, we'd have to add more badges at the bottom and so all those people could feel good about not actually contributing much to the project.

(Does sarcasm really not come through in written text?)

You actually have a good point. As GPUs get faster and faster, it gets easier to reach the top badge.

Or you could do as the Republicans do and just give badges to donors and the top 0.1% and tell the gullible that the badges will trickle down.

I think in all seriousness you should add an individual badge for 10 billion.

As we will pass that level soon. (5 times the current high badge)

If there was a way to add the individual first to reach 10 billion total to FDC's collatz page would be nice also.

It still represents a lot of time and serious investment in the project.

Or you could do what the democrats/socialists do and just give free badges to everyone whether they participate or not and then pass the issue of paying for all that free stuff forward to the children and grandchildren of the gullible.

America's Democrats and the Republicans are the same as slicker adminstrator of this project. THEY do not do what want they their supporters and donors or "participators" .. stupid images/badges every few bilions credit is Ultra-Heavy work for boinc project owners/admins ..

Sarcasm and truly identification of issues in this case is on the spot_))

But they can strike like main admin MindModeling@Home.. No answer to the system and also for supporters..for months..

Since I don't have decent image editing software that allowed creating additional colors, I replaced the existing badges with new ones that use military rank. There are now 19 different ranks that range from 100K to 100 billion. Yep, to be a 5 star general, you need 100 billion credits. Given how GPUs keep doubling in speed every year or two, it probably won't be as long many would think. The new ranks kick in a 4B, 6B, 10B, 15B, 20B, 25B, 25B, 30B, 35B, 40B, 45B, 50B, and 100B.

Funny that it is this one for me because I retired with this rank. SFC or Sergeant First Class E7.

I do not think it was a wise move on your part only because they are US Army Ranks and users around the world run this project.

What was wrong with the older badges?

First, the badges are all the same but only differ by color. 10% of people have difficulties differentiating colors.

Second, the badges were created by a volunteer and given that each background color is actually several colors, creating a new color when one only has MS Paint is quite difficult if not impossible. It isn't as easy as choosing "fill" and changing the color. The 32x32 icons contain about 20-30 colors each.

Third, there are a limited number of colors and people don't necessarily associate pink with really good (for example). Ranks or icons that differ in shape and/or size are a better method.

I could be persuaded to switch from military ranks pretty easily -- especially since this project has nothing at all to do with the military. What other ranking icons are out there with enough options? There's no such thing as a dumb idea. Any suggestions may give others an even better idea so tell me what you would like to see.

But getting to those really high numbers would require the system to run consistently for a long time <smile>

I figure by the end of next year I might make it to Captain.

Then again, we all know an E9 is a higher operational rank than a major <smile>

Given the same amount of time, I might just make it to Colonel....
But then we all know that it is the sad sack private that is going to win the war, with a little help from the NCO's.... {BEG}

I loved the style of the old badges! They were perfect for this project, you could identify the project by the badge on the first look! And those badges were very beautiful in comparison to many of the other projects.
I`m in the military (LtCol, Air Force and not Army ;-) ), but using ranks for this project is not right. Please go back to the old badges or start a contest so all can contribute and make suggestions for new badges!

Thank you very much,
Chris

The problem is if you don't have something different than everyone else then how do you tell which badge goes with which project when all you see is a bunch of them in a signature? Sure you can tell when you come to a particular project but sometimes you can't even tell which project has which badge until you find it by going thru a bunch of them. As you can see by my signature below it has SOOO many they even go off the side of the page on my 17" screen. Do I remember what badge goes with which project, nope not a chance.

You are right and therefore there needs to be a badge that is related to the project.

The Collatz fractal is perfect as a badge for this project. It has a huge recognition value:

He is exactly right, the problem with your argument Chris?

Each and every one of those badges has a theme related to it's project.

My take?

It's just a ranking system, and when you have so many the point of what is being ranked becomes lost in the pile. Each and every one of them represents a level of work done and that is it. What they individually mean is irrelevant to that, particularly since I believe they are not equivalents.

AND,

Some projects give you one badge and replace it with the new one when you reach the next level, others just give you another badge to add to the collection. You can get so many they become meaningless.

Me, on sites that allow sigs, I just put a link to my rankings in boinc, much easier and clearer to read and understand outside the gobblydegook that has become of collecting badges.

A single simple rank/level system is best, one that switches to the next level representing your contribution.

To each his own though...

So the military ranks are too generic and the previous badges were unique. Each was also hundreds of colors which makes it impossible to just "fill" with a new color and as I'm certainly not an image editing expert, adding more is outside my current range of skills. If anyone want to give creating new badges a try, please do. Here are my criteria for the new badge icons:

1. Need 15-20 ranks/badges.

2. Each should be distinguished from the others in a way other than color. Size, shape, content, something like that. They can be different colors. Color just can't be the only way to differentiate them.

3. 32x32 seems to be a good size in order for them to fit on the stats sites with all the other project's badges.

4. All submissions should be in by December 15th. Everyone will then get to vote on the one they like the best.

Ok, how bout I take a stab at it. I'm fairly proficient in Gimp.

Will try to maintain the theme and maintain the previous set since that is what everyone seems to like.

32x32 is better than the current 28x28 and the fractal doesn't really need to be multi colored, it looks great in large scale but as small as the badges are single color will work.

We currently have seven, to get to 20 we would need 13 more. will see what I can do....

Here's 20 icons, keeping the original fractal design, scaling to 32, with the original 7 intact, and I added the missing 1 billion.

100K Bronze
1M Silver
5M Gold
20M Amethyst
100M Ruby
500M Sapphire
1B Turquoise
2B Emerald
4B Onyx
6B Jaspar
10B Jade
15B Topaz
20B Peridot
25B Rodolite
30B Aquamarine
35B Chalcedony
40B Firestone
45B Spinel
50B Afghanite
100B Titanium

Maybe these will work with a minimum of problems....
