Message 18410 - Posted: 9 Feb 2014, 15:22:14 UTC

hello,
i have a problem:
i have 2 pc with 4 amd 7970 (two gpu for PC), and I use the gpu for collazt and the cpu for "rosetta".
But, when rosetta proget is's operative, boinc use only 1 gpu, if I suspend "rosette" boinc uses both the GPU.
why? I can fix it?

I use windows 7 service pack 1, and the boinc version 7.2.33(x64)

My guess is that BOINC thinks the CPU is overworked when running two collatz WUs along with the Rosetta WUs. There were recent changes to the BOINC client to keep it from over committing the CPU. You may want to try creating an app_config.xml file for both Collatz and Rosetta and setting the Collatz at 0.5 CPUs per GPU and telling Rosetta to run at most "total CPUs - 1" concurrently (e.g. set to 5 on your 6 core AMD host and 7 on your 8 core i7 host).

thank you for your reply,
I tried, as suggested, put 2 app_config.xml, 1 for collatz e 1 for rosetta, but it was useless.
In rosetta project (cpu amd 1090t) the app_config.xml is:

<app_config>
<app>
<name>minirosetta</name>
<max_concurrent>5</max_concurrent>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>0</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>1</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
</app_config>

and (cpu intel 2600K):

<app_config>
<app>
<name>minirosetta</name>
<max_concurrent>7</max_concurrent>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>0</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>1</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
</app_config>

In collazt is :
<app_config>
<app>
<name>solo_collatz</name>
<max_concurrent>2</max_concurrent>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>1</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.5</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
</app_config>

I also tried, release all CPU cores except 1, but even if the cpu was not being used for anything, boinc stop 1 gpu.

I also tried, istall the older version of BOINC (7.0.64 (x64)), resultless.

For rosetta, don't use the gpu_versions element or anything that goes inside since it isn't a GPU application. All you would use for Rosetta is:

<app_config>
<app>
<name>minirosetta</name>
<max_concurrent>5</max_concurrent>
</app>
</app_config>

Tha collatz app_config looks correct. Do you also have <use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>
in the options of your cc_config.xml? Add <sched_op_debug>1</sched_op_debug> to the cc_config log_flags so you can see whether BOINC is requesting Intel GPU work or not. If it is, then I have a feeling that there is a bug in the BOINC server code in that it thinks the opencl_intel_gpu is CPU instead of GPU based.

I'm currently running the same two programs on all my machines, collatz as primary on the GPU's and Rosetta as Primary on the CPU'S five 8 core AMD and one 12 core Intel.

They all run one Colatz WU per GPU 7990's & 7970's (usually 4) and 5 rosetta WU's at the same time.... (9 on the Intel)

Windows 7 pro fully updated and Boinc 7.2.28.

Haven't had a hickup

My CC_Config....

<cc_config>
<options>
<ncpus>-1</ncpus>
<report_results_immediately>1</report_results_immediately>
<use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>
</options>
</cc_config>

My solo_collatz_6.03_windows_x86_64__opencl_amd_gpu.config

verbose=1
items_per_kernel=22
kernels_per_reduction=9
threads=8
sleep=1
build_options=-Werror

I'm not currently running an app_config file.....

Everything has been running fine since I reset and reconnected. Haven't errored out a single WU to my knowledge, but I haven't checked in a day or so...

Correction 4 errored WU's, 2 on the 7th and 2 on the 9th all from the same machine which had a hard crash a couple of day ago......
Other than that as smooth a rollout as I have ever seen...

Message 18439 - Posted: 10 Feb 2014, 21:10:27 UTC - in response to Message 18398.

All WUs are crashing with "computation error" after collatz is back online.
Nothing changed to my configuration. It's a Dual Xeon MP running SuSE Linux 12.2 x86 and 3 additional GT 430 with OpenCL support.
Before the crash happend everything worked fine and I did not change anything to my system. stderr does not tell anything too.

So any ideas folks?

Version 6.06 has just been released for Linux i686 which I hope will fix the error. I was able to reproduce the error on an Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32-bit machine with an nVidia 9800 GTX+ GPU. Version 6.06 works OK on that machine so I'm hoping that it isn't a fluke.

Thanx for your help. I'm back online and the three GT 430 are crunching well again. ;-)

Go ahead and let them run. The 6.03 will probably fail but the 6.04 should work OK.

Thanks for the TeamViewer tip.

A Windows ATI (CAL/Brook+) app was successfully compiled under VS2012 and is currently being tested so AMD HD 2400 thru HD 47xx GPUs will be able to participate.

Any news on that front?

A number of volunteers are returning results with the error: "couldn't start app: CreateProcess() failed - (unknown error)". This is due to a missing Microsoft C++ Runtime library required by the nVidia OpenCL DLLs. The MSVC Runtimes are available from Microsoft at
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30679 or from here for 32-bit or 64-bit hosts.

Does this error occur only on nVidia cards? Because I'm getting this error on both machines using an ASUS HD4550 & on the other a Sapphire HD6450.
What Windows version does solo_collatz needs? depends.exe says OS version 6.0 whereas for SETI (Lunatics version) says OS version 4.0

What irks me is that the AMD app IS the EXACT same as the nVidia app and the Intel app which work fine. (The file is just renamed.) So, it isn't that OS X can't run it. Th problem is with Apple's AMD GPU driver which is buggier that my boat dock at sunset.

You did see that BOINC never started the science app in the crash dump? If I were a betting man I'd think uninitialized variable.

So with the change over, I will need to figure out some hard ware migrations and time frames along with project choices.

For a long time I have been running a mix of HD 4650's and HD 4850's. Running BOINC 6.10.58 I could run the 4850's on MW, Moowrap and Collatz. I could run the HD 4650's on Moowrap and Collatz.

When I move up to more current BOINC software, MW will drop out of the mix for that hardware. Now that Collatz has dropped out of that set, on those workstations I'm currently inclined to stay with what I've got (6.10.58) and let Collatz fall to the wayside.

As I migrate to newer AMD cards -- started with 6750's, 7750's and 7770's. I move to newer BOINC software 7.2.33, plus later ATI drivers. With that combination, I can run Collatz, PrimeGrid, and POEM and World when they run GPU work, but not Moo (it has issues with the 77xx and up series), nor MW with much efficiency.

So where does that leave me -- some older set ups will now run only Moowrap and MW and no Collatz.

Migrated newer setups (requiring a time and money investment) will run POEM, World Grid (POEM is just about to relaunch new GPU work, World -- not holding my breath), along with PrimeGrid and Collatz.

For a long time the combinations yielded a RAC of 500K or so for Collatz, which dropped down to 250K with POEM picking up the work when it was steadily available.

In the current mix, Moowrap gets a larger piece simple because it (and MW) support the 4850, with Moowrap working also on 5750 and 6750 GPU's.

The push to the newer hardware plus newer drivers, plus newer BOINC software, and (from what I've heard) lower 'yields' per cycle from Collatz, means that PrimeGrid is picking up a bunch of cycles from me and that POEM, should it be successful with its new GPU work release will pick some of that up as well.

I expect that the end result for me with Collatz will be to see its ongoing RAC dwindle down toward 100K -- especially if POEM has GPU work to offer.

None of this is meant to be polemic at all, just sort of a review by a high volume Boincaholic on the state of things.

Message 18492 - Posted: 12 Feb 2014, 23:12:26 UTC - in response to Message 18489.

Is BOINC running as a service? If so, I don't believe it can run GPU apps as the services can't talk to the desktop. I know that's the case with XP so I assume that for Win2K3 it would be true as well.

Message 18499 - Posted: 13 Feb 2014, 9:33:21 UTC - in response to Message 18492.

When you told me about the TeamViewer and other VNC progs., I told you that it was running as service because I was using MS RDP & the only version for that was 6.12.34. As you can see from the Events log it's version 7.0.64 now & NOT running as a service. It's a fresh install of Windows & using TeamViewer to access the machine now. What are the "hard/soft ware" requirements? Do I need to put the params in the "Optimizing Collatz 4.07 Applications" & other threads in the solo_collatz_6.03_windows_intelx86__opencl_amd_gpu.config file? Do I need the app_info.xml? And I did reset (not remove) the program.
What about the missing DLLs required for the nVidia cards? Both my machines have ATI cards.

(As a side note I tried installing the Intel OpenCL for CPU but it didn't install because it encountered an error. What the error was? Ask those ***holes at Intel. My guess is that it doesn't install on Socket 1156 mobos. From the output of clinfo.exe the CPU is using the AMD OpenCL & I'll have to upgrade to BOINC >=v7.2.21.)

Thanks for the help so far.

I added a new opencl_amd_gpu version (v6.04) for Windows x86 which I'm hoping will work for you.
