I was disappointed to have GPU support now limited to OpenCL. I have been doing work units on a computer with an ATI Radeon HD4250. This GPU is single precision. OpenCL is not supported for this GPU, I don't even think it will do CAL. Yeah, I suppose when you have Titans doing work units in minutes, rather than the tens of hours my HD4250 takes, maybe it's not worth supporting it. But it is the only project I could do on this GPU, so it was all yours (Collatz)...

It if won't do CAL then it won't run the ATI app as Brook+ is a layer that sits on top of CAL like this:
App->Brook DLL->CAL

I've been working on ATI and CUDA apps that do all the v6 veriification but thus far the ATI apps work on some GPUs and not others. When it doesn't work, the app still returns as if successful which, without a wingman, is really bad.

If I can't get new apps working, I may bring back the mini_collatz app but limit it to ATI and CPU apps.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was running work units on the HD4250 GPU so I must be wrong about CAL. I (and my GPU) will wait patiently.

I believe Seti has CAL app, but it requires some serious driver magic to make it run and there are no WUs half of the time. That said, since I dont want my 4250 and 2450 to sit idle forever, I may have to go back to Seti.

The ATI apps have been released. The Radeon Mobility HD 3200 on my wife's old laptop was going to take over 100 hours with the larger WUs. So, today I changed the server so slower GPUs can get smaller workunits. It will be interesting to see whether BOINC's Multi-Size feature really works as Collatz is the first project to use it.

I just noticed that I have stopped receiving work units. This happened once before when the applications were updated (see top of thread). I have an ATI Radeon HD4250 that doesn't do CAL. I think you used to have a special application just for these cases. Will you be doing this again? Should I just be patient and wait or is something else going on?

I'll be gone for a couple weeks after today. I'll check back when I return.

Thanks,

That would be cool - though collatz_sieve on CAL would be cooler !

Yeah, especially the old apps have bugs which cause them to return bad results over and over again. That requires manual intervention for each one that exceeds the error limit on my part.

I finially bit the bullet and spent $30 each on the two machines I had running the HD3870 and HD4830 to get them running a cheap AMD GPU that was as fast and could run the OpenCL apps.

OK, I've been back for quite a while and not getting any work units for my ATI Radeon HD4250. My preferences do not request any particular type of work unit. Will the HD2450 specific application be brought back? Or should I give up on this? I can't figure out the problem by reading the news on the home page about the new sieve applications.

Thanks,
Erik

That pretty much just leaves Moo! as the only project still supporting those older cards..

That's because they have been running the same apps for the last 6 years. There is a bug in the collatz apps that causes the old versions to return invalid data. The new app does NOT compile correctly because the Brook+ compiler which hasn't been supported for years has some major bugs. So, unless someone is willing to learn to tweak the assembly output from the Brook+ compiler in order to identify and fix the bugs, there probably won't be another ATI app.
