Message 18783 - Posted: 6 Mar 2014, 23:34:34 UTC - in response to Message 18778.

I've installed Android BOINC and linked to the server, however I never receive any Collatz events. Is there something I'm missing?

Looks to me like it has 4 WUs in progress.

Thanx!

I never used Collatz for getting CPU work... So I NEVER have given it a thought.
Now I created new location: school , which uses ONLY CPU work. :)
I will let ya ppl know how it runs and how long it takes on 1.0 GHz Snapdragon and on 4 x 1.2 GHz Cortex A10 or whatever the name of the CPU is ...in the new Desire 500 :)

How fast will also depend upon the size. Currently, BOINC needs a little tutoring in math as it is sending Androids tasks which I guarantee will take well over 7 days to complete instead of sending the tasks that are 32 times smaller. Yep. It be stupid!

The task names are solo_collatz_<start_number>_<size>_<attempts>
For example:
solo_collatz_2370391840775083895151_206158430208_0

It starts at 2370391840775083895151 and will check 206,158,430,208 numbers.
It __should__ be getting WUs like:
solo_collatz_2370391840775083895151_6442450944_0

The WUs range in size from 6 billion to 824 billion numbers so the smallest are 1/128 the size of the large ones. Yet, BOINC keeps sending out the large ones to devices that should be getting the small ones. Sure, My Galaxy S4 ran a WU with 103,079,215,104 numbers in two days but it was running 24/7. Most people don't have their phone or tablet plugged in 24/7 so that isn't a real world scenario. Given an 8 hour charge (overnight) on average it would have taken over 6 days to complete. That's why I added the smaller sizes. Now if I could only get BOINC to use them!

Don't believe the time to complete estimate. Calculate it yourself. Use elapsed time in seconds * 100 / percent complete to get the total seconds. Total seconds / 3600 will get you the total hours. Or use elapsed time in minutes and divide by 60. (Yes, I know all the math geeks on the project can figure all that out by themselves.) The BOINC client estimate is terrible because it is based on floating point operations which has nothing at all to do with Collatz. I'm working on "the powers that be" to change it but haven't gotten vary far. BOINC also uses the floating point operations per second (flops) to decide which size WU to send each device which is why it is screwing up so badly since Collatz doesn't use any flops.

Still no work for my two phones.
Probably "dont need" - the buffer of WUs is probably full of *simap* W-units. :(

It used to be that suspending the project would allow it to get work from other projects but they fixed BOINC so that even if suspended, it still counts those tasks so you'll either have to wait for them to finish or abort them. Given the limited availability of SIMAP WUs, I assume you will do the former.

The Official Boinc client for Android doesn't use venues other than the default, and even then most of the web preferences are overridden in the client,
while you may move the host to a different venue, and the server will display the host being on that venue, the client is still looking at the default,
If you have 'Use CPU' set to 'No' on the default, you won't get any work, the solution is move it to the default, and any non-Android hosts away from the default,
Yes, I've mentioned this on the mailing lists after Jorg encountered it (and arkayn beforehand, and others), just waiting for someone to take some notice.

Yeah!
Thank You for the info. :)

I have changed that to Yes on friday. Got 1 WU for each phone...

Today there was already NO again! So that it has somehow REVERTED!
I hope that it will stay Yes this time...
I go to try get WUs for all 4 cores there on the new HTC... cause it ONLY managed to get one before the default settings has reverted - how DARE IT ??? Did anyone else see also some revert in settings lately?

Finally. The app for Android - works for me.

You should give a warning here in the release notes, that it ONLY will work IF and only if there is CPU allowed in the DEFAULT preferences. :-)))

3 from 4 cores now compute Collatz. 4th is yet occupied with 3 half-finished SIMAP WUs - they will be computed extremely fast. I hope the 4th CPU core will also get some 16 or 128 times smaller WU than the first CPU has got (this one will definitely last at least 145 hours). :)

Looks like I should be okay, I am at 26.871% after 36:46:19, so I should finish at around 144 hours.

Finished the first in 136:35:17 and got 936.40 for the work.

The next one is much smaller and will most likely be something like 100 points or so.

Hello! I only charge the smartphone at night and it was not enough time for finishing the work. I had to cancel it. Sorry!

I changed the scheduler so that it will only send small WUs to CPU devices. The definition of small is 1/2, 1/4, or 1/8 the size that the mini_collatz WUs used to be so they should finish within a couple days even if only charging overnight.

As far as a warning about default preferences only, that's a BOINC bug the BOINC developers have/are addressing and will be fixed in the next version.
