I've had computation errors before, but I've never had many with Collatz, and I've certainly never seen a task aborted by the project before... Does this mean anything?

No, at least not in this case.

Here's what happened:
The WU was sent out to host X.
For whatever reason, host X did not complete the WU prior to the deadline. There are a number of reasons for that but the three main reasons are that:
a) the host later joined a number of other projects and was over worked or that
b) the host was turned off for a period of time or
c) the estimated work was waaaaaay off (which happens a lot since BOINC uses floating point benchmarks and Collatz only uses integer math)
Regardless of the reason, it didn't finish in time. So, BOINC sent the WU to you. But, before you could run it, the other host completed it and it was valid. So, BOINC cancelled the one it had sent to your computer since it was no longer needed.

That tends to irk people especially if their computer is half finished with the WU, but given projects with really, really long WUs, people didn't want to work on a WU for months if it wasn't needed. About the only good solution would be to allow projects to determine whether WUs should be cancelled or not rather than making it work that way no matter what.
