Worth is relative to what you want to do, and how much you're willing to pay in order to do it.

It's a pretty powerful card, if that's what you're asking--I only have a 280X so I don't have personal experience to input.

The R series cards do not work at every project, they need to upgrade to the latest Server version of Boinc but that comes with a TON of other updates they must do to get the project back to where it is now. MOST projects heavily modify the Server software and thus each new version needs to be modified too, but as in regular software since the Server software has been updated things aren't exactly plug and play with the changes. Everytime Slicker, the Admin here, does a Server udpate it can take a couple of weeks for things to be seamless for us users again.

All that being said a 290x will be faster than a 260x card:
AMD R7 260x 896
AMD R9 270x 1280
AMD R9 280x 2048
AMD R9 290x 2816

The 2nd column is the number of 'stream processors' and essentially the more stream processor the faster the card will crunch. There ARE of course other factors involved, with clock speeds being a big one too. But also are you plugging the card into a pci-e 2 slot or a pci-e 3 slot, is it a 16x slot or an 8x slot, or even a 4x slot? These are NOT the only things either!

As for 'is it worth it' if it's an upgrade from your current card then yes it's worth it, IMHO. BUT be prepared for it to not work on ALL Boinc projects that have gpu apps.
