Message 21388 - Posted: 2 Oct 2015, 13:01:14 UTC

I am now having issues with computer 143026 (MacPro 3,1; OS X 10.10.5; EVGA GTX680 MacEdition). This unit was rock solid crunching the previous generation of GPU tasks. However, for approximately 90% of the sieve GPU tasks it is now generating an error message after approximately 2 s of crunch time. Any help would be appreciated.

Note that this does not appear to be a manifestation of the well-documented problem that many Mac users with AMD GPUs have been having with C@H GPU tasks running under OS X 10.9 or later.

Again, TIA for any help.

The issues with this machine have resolved on their own. Cause of the resolution is unknown. However, I am now having problems with 164509 and 135623, i3 iMacs with AMD 4670 GPUs running under OS X 10.10.4. Both of these machines had been crunching C@H GPU tasks quite nicely, albeit slowly. However, GPU sieve tasks are crashing in 1-2 s on both these machines.

Error: (-54)Invalid work group size at 1692 of RunSteps

Edit the collatz config file and change the threads to 6, sieve_size to 20, and lut_size to 10 and see if that works. The defaults are evidently too high for the slower GPUs.

Thanks for the advice, Slicker. Unfortunately, I don't have any experience editing my Collatz config files. I assume that you are recommending that I edit a file in the \Library\Application Support\BOINC Data\projects\boinc.thesonntags.com_collatz\ folder. I have 7 .config files in this folder:

collatz_sieve_1.20_x86_64-apple-darwin.config
collatz_sieve_1.22_x86_64-apple-darwin__opencl_amd_gpu.config
solo_collatz_6.06_x86_64-apple-darwin__opencl_intel_cpu.config
large_collatz_6.06_x86_64-apple-darwin__opencl_amd_gpu.config
mini_collatz_6.06_x86_64-apple-darwin__opencl_amd_gpu.config
solo_collatz_6.06_x86_64-apple-darwin__opencl_amd_gpu.config
mini_collatz_6.06_x86_64-apple-darwin__opencl_intel_cpu.config

Since I am having trouble with the GPU application, should I just edit the second one?

Also, because all of these files are empty, I am having trouble ascertaining the syntax of the additions. Should it be as follows?

threads=6
sieve_size=20
lut_size=10

Thanks so much in advance for your assistance. Best wishes for an exciting, eventful, and fulfilling 2016. War Eagle! -Dave

Slicker, thanks again for the advice. I made the suggested edits to the .config file. However, computer 135623 continues to generate errors after approximately 2 seconds of crunching GPU tasks. Any other suggestions? TIA

Hi Slicker! I see from post 21860 that you suggested a cruncher using an HD 4600 make the following modifications to his .config file:

verbose=1
threads=6
sieve_size=20
lut_size=10
kernels_per_reduction=4

Will do so and report back shortly.

Unfortunately, these changes didn't solve the problem. I have come to the hard-earned conclusion that tweaking the settings of these computers with older GPUs doesn't make much sense from a cost/benefit analysis. So, in those cases where I can't get the GPU to crunch Collatz@Home tasks, I have changed the BOINC preferences for that computer so that it no longer requests C@H GPU tasks.

Now, as you can see from my next post to the thread, I considering a different scheme for increasing my crunching capacity.

As many of you know, I have five early 2008 MacPro computers (MacPro 3,1; dual quad core Xeon CPUs) in my office and research laboratory that are also involved in BOINC distributive computing projects, including Collatz@Home. And, my failed attempts to get the ATI Radeon HD 5770 and 5870 GPUs to crunch C@H tasks under OS X 10.9, 10.10 or 10.11 have been documented in this forum. As an alternative, I have begun installing NVIDIA GPUs in these machines, including a MacEdition GeForce GTX 680 (computer 544749) and a "flashed" GeForce GTX 960 (computers 143026 and 153579). The 680 is yielding about 700,000 credits/day and the 960s are yielding about 1 million credits/day. That's fine, but now I have two ATI Radeon HD 5770 GPUs gathering dust on my workbench. Is there any way I can configure BOINC to simultaneously crunch Collatz@Home GPU tasks on the NVIDIA GPU and Einstein@Home GPU tasks on the ATI GPU in the same computer?
