I've just installed the latest runtime as recommended and re-booted. I've tried resetting the project but no applications or WU's are downloaded. I'm running 64-bit WIN7 and BOINC 7.4.42

Everyone needs a life outside of BOINC. Maybe the rest of us should try it. ;)

Just had a quick look. Can confirm, there is NO life outside Boinc :-)

Slicker answer last night in the news section:

Message 21474 - Posted: 9 Oct 2015, 17:48:36 UTC - in response to Message 21470.

Somebody turn the Sieve Work Generator back on please.

P.S., And maybe reboot the server while you're at it.

Well, when there are several hundred people who burn through hundreds of WUs at a time with errors and keep doing it, the server gets bogged down a little.

One of the problems right now is that the database exceeds total RAM in the machine. Since MySQL sucks at memory management, it only works well when the entire database fits into RAM. Otherwise, the speed goes waaaaaaaayyyyyyyy down. If it slows down too much, then BOINC assumes that when it attempts to retrieve the next WU from the database and it times out, that there must be none available. That's like assuming that because someone doesn't answer their phone, they must hate you rather than assuming they are unable to answer it for some reason. Anyway, because BOINC is stupid, it then tells the work generator to make more WUs. When it does, the database gets even larger slowing it down even more. It's a catch-22. Right now the database is about 2GB larger than total RAM which means in order to get it running at the proper speed, I either need to add another 4-8GB RAM (if there are slots open and I don't know for sure if there are). That, or I have to fix the BOINC server software so it stops generating work when a query times out. I also found a lot of spam in the profiles so I truncated all profiles to 2500 characters per response box, added recaptcha, and a min credit of 100 before you can create a profile. If that isn't bad enough, the big buck snuck behind me this a.m. and I was out of position for a shot. Got a nice video of him on the trail cam though.

Any chance of a look at the 'Big Buck' video when you've got time to post it somewhere?

Slicker,
Thanks for the explanation. It is possible/practical to get a larger class of sieve jobs for higher end GPUs? My Desktop system is chewing through each of these in about 100 sec and keeps running out.

Sometimes you can increase the size of the existing chips, which in effect gives you more ram in the same space.

I'm trying to get things to settle down a bit before making more changes although I'm thinking maybe 64x larger than he current sieve WU would be appropriate. That would put your GPU at about 2 hours per WU. There would be no CPU apps though since they would take too many days to complete it and would time out.
