I am dealing with a Windows 7 crash which required a full reinstall of Windows 7 professional 64 bit from scratch.

I have the OS installed -- with SP1 (I'm downloading the gazillion updates to Windows 7 as I type this).

I then installed the current Nvidia Driver for a GTX 750 .

I then installed BOINC. When I installed Collatz to work with the video card it downloaded work units and immediately generated computation errors.

I've tried multiple version of the C++ redistributable but know from other workstations that the 2013 should work just fine (it's what the Nvidia driver deploys).

Is there any advice regarding a solution here.

GPUGrid and PrimeGrid GPU processing work fine with this new install.

OK, I appear to have solved the problem on my miscreant workstation.

For whatever reasons, one specifically needs the 2012 C++ redistributable.

Also for whatever reasons, that puppy is not available from Microsoft or nearly any other site.

I tracked down the files 32 bit and 64 bit.

I then uninstalled the 2013 redistributables (which the current nvidia drivers install) as you can not install an older version with newer iterations installed.

I then installed the 2012 c++ pair and voila Collatz now runs -- it is 4 minutes into an 80 minute run for a GTX 750ti

As I understand it, I can install newer versions of the C++ redistributable.

My **guess** is that the code in Collatz specifically needs to find the 2012 version to be happy.

I suspect that a rewrite of the collatz code to live with newer installed versions when 2012 is not found would be a more global solution since Microsoft has made the 2012 version unavailable.

Hi

I had the exact same issues with a new PC that was running Win 7 Pro - Collatz would error within seconds.

I then recalled about the C++ Redistributable and sure enough the Collatz home page mentions it.

Sadly, I tried both the 2015 and 2013 versions but neither worked.

A quick check on t'web and I found the 2012 version and it works fine.

So, maybe Collatz website admins need to tidy up the links on their home page and maybe even offer the download directly, as the project relies on it and then no-one is reliant on the Microsoft website for links that don't work :-(

As this statement is not correct:

For Windows, the most recent Visual C++ runtime 2012 or later

regards
Tim
