Message 24478 - Posted: 16 Nov 2017, 19:40:00 UTC - in response to Message 24476.

And I got my one little PC doing 7 E@H at a time plus two GPU. It gives me something to do. I wonder how slowly BOINC would move on my little Pi.

Your Pi will work, even here at Collatz I think, they used to have micro units for those kind of things anyway.

As for your gpu's unless you have newer ones than those that used to be here then I don't have any optimized tweaks for you.

It's a laptop. It doesn't do too bad on short gpu units at E@H.

I'm trying to compile BOINC on my pi but I've hit an openssl roadblock. I tried one thing I found on the BOINC message boards (google never forgets). But alas, it didn't help. Since I'm in over my head at this point, I posted it to the dev list.

Should make 1T on Collatz today :)

Umm I think that's with a B not a T.

And Kathryn the 'make' steps are what always scared me away from Linux. What's forcing me away from Windows is it's refusal to NOT upgrade computers that have no business being on Win10 in the first place!! I'm having problems right now though with my AMD gpu's and Linux not supporting them by default anymore. Everything is running for the moment though.

Well crap! You're right :) But anyways, I made it, even though a couple of my machines "imploded" with the 1709 build of Windows on Collatz. Still trying to get the main one running the project again. May have a bad GPU.

Well it was just a fluke that make choked that first time. I ran it again, but I got a bunch of errors. That might be from building from master (?). Whatever it is the most up to date code.

It's quite gloomy today. I hear the s word is in the forecast. I was betting on 80 for Thanksgiving. But I guess it'll be seasonal. :-)

Well, magically the principle machine just started crunching Collatz WUs again. (I know, don't look a gift horse in the mouth). Still can't figure out why the other machine won't. And I'm too old to keep trying. At this time, I will leave it as a mystery of life :).

Just rain here. Still have time to blow out the sprinklers :).

Where do you live? I'm in North Carolina between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach, SC. and have sprinklers too, we don't blow ours out though, it doesn't freeze hard enough here. So we just take the the brass valve off and let any water expand out of the opening and we are fine.

Also how old are you?

Wow! The new firefox is fast. I'm using chrome on the pi. Considering it's power, it's quite snappy.

Yeah, I think so, too. But it's missing one of the add-ons that I truly have to have to use it "Safely". No-Script isn't available (yet). I'm holding off upgrading my other instances (on the other computers) until it's available.

Also, Collatz problem solved! Got a private message and found a thread on GPU errors in the Number Crunching forum. Missing .dlls. We're back to that hell again.

Must be why FaceBook is giving me fits with it.

Ah okay I'll be 65 next month. It's supposed to be rainy and chilly for you guys this week I think. Chilly with maybe some snow for Kathryn and just cool for me with the high in the upper 50's to low 60's.

I got a new for me computer yesterday but it doesn't work, it's an Alienware, my first, and it weighs a fricking TON!! It's a desktop about 8 years old with an i7-975 cpu in it, that means it thinks it's an 8 core cpu. But it has active cooling fins on top, they actually move up and down as the fans speed up or slow down, liquid cooling for the cpu is a closed loop system so no radiator to keep full. I removed the liquid cooling and put a Hyper 212 LED fan on the cpu but that didn't fix the problem, it turns on then of then on then off quickly likes overheating is why I replaced the liquid cooling. But that didn't fix it so figured out the problem is I have to hold the button down on the power supply to keep it running, I ordered a brand new one for $70 off of Ebay so hopefully that's all that's wrong with it now. It's a 1000 watt power supply, proprietary of course. It came with no hard drive, I have several spares and 12gb of memory and a COA sticker on it for Win7 Ultimate, so I'm really hoping I can get it up and running. It cost me $250 and with the new psu that's about the limit for me to fix this, I will buy a new motherboard and put it in a generic case and use Linux if I have too.

No optimizing (yet). I'm concerned about heat. Might try it on the newer GPUs (1060, 1070) as they're lower power draws with better cooling solutions.
