I get it - use at your own risk. But i run test programs for all sorts of projects. I'd like to see this project succeed.
I run Linux machines with GPUs. Around the start of June, i started seeing other Linux boxes with new Collatz credit, so i thought i'd give it a shot. I turned on just the GPUs (my normal), and got no units at all. I also turned on CPU units, and only got GPU units, and on 12 June 2018, i got credit. (!) Later, i started getting CPU units also. They said they'd run long, so i let them run a couple days. My estimates were also way past the deadline (time into the unit run / fraction done = total time). On 24 June 2018, i aborted two units in progress, and whatever was in the queue. I turned off CPU units. I continued getting GPU units. On 5 July 2018, i got zero new credit, with 52 units in error (Validate Error). That's about 2 days (52 hours is pretty close) of GPU time. I had gotten lower credit on July 4th, but not zero. Curiously, though these units report as taking about an hour each, WUProp reported only 14 hours for the most recent 24 hours. I don't know which to believe. The system is run 24/7. There's nothing else on the GPU. And yet, i'd gotten about half credit on July 4th, which may or may not be about right, given that i don't know exactly when boincstats samples the data. These units may be running full time but not validating - as reported.

An invalid unit: task 4135440 work unit 3727239 computer 146594

GTX 950 with AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor and 16 GB RAM on Linux Mint 13 (out of support for a year - but i tracked down which disk drive was bad, and have taken it from service, so an upgrade is once again in my near future).

Are you using the Nvidia drivers or the other ones that Linux provides? I ran a Linux box with no problems after I switched to the Nvidia drivers. However I have never gotten my AMD cards to work under Linux, but that's not a problem you are having right now.

As for the cpu credits the Admin is still having problems with the Server side Boinc software and it's a work in progress. Seems it likes giving credits based on some value that Collatz does not use so won't give any credits out of the box for cpu units. He outlined the problems for the cpu units in the News section a week or so ago.

NO ONE is getting credits for the gpu units right now either, some idiot is trying to hack their credits and although the software is stopping them from getting their credits it's stopping everyones elses too. The Admin is working on it since at least yesterday, he didn't have a 'happy holiday'!!

At this point it does not matter, until John can craft revised code to deal with the hacker crap, no work is going to be validated.

Perhaps he'll be able to work through this over the weekend.

The same for me. Validation error.
About someone who try to manipulate, it already happen in the past (march/april 2018).
The user was known ! The Admin needed to reset project.

He got thousand of tasks. Then on his host (a little quad core and very little GPU),
after a few hours, the host reach more than 10,000,000 credits with a RAC of more than 1,000,000 !!!
The most strange, no any WU were visible in returned tasks !

Something similair is strange now
https://boinc.thesonntags.com/collatz/show_host_detail.php?hostid=834662
Also host 831900 , 832118
Look when this host was created, when tasks were sent, when the results returned...
Totally this host returned about 2000 WU in only 2 days !
With a average working of 900 sec (15 minuts) and three GPU,
It is a max of 12 WU per hour (3gpu x 0.25hr) ?
So impossible to crunch two thousand WU in only three days !!!
And how to have 270,000,000 credits ???
With a average credit of 28,000 / WU, it need to return about 9650 WU !!!
With other words, considering 12 WU / hour, it would be 800 hours = 33 days

This host do it in a few hours !!!

Strange ! You say strange ? It is strange !!!

While those of us who have paid attention here are aware of the problem John (Slicker) and the project have encountered due to a nefarious hacker, at this point we lack any sense of the status of John's repair/recovery efforts.

For me I simply check in here to see if there are any updates. I have left Collatz processing in suspend mode as I don't know if my workstation work units if completed, will ever get validated.

I am hopeful that, at the very least, we will get some status update over the weekend.

Just give him some time to sort it out. It's gotta be frustrating to run into this after it just happened a few months ago.

Firstly, I’d like to say Football is coming home!! Ahem.

Lothar Collatz would have wanted all of us to chill and enjoy this fine summer we are having. The Admin will allow us all to prevail, I am sure of it.
I’ve lost 100+million in credits, but you know what, life is great and we are lucky to have an admin as committed to this project as we are. Far as I know, The Admin does this for free, which in a way is unfair as people crunching for GRC in here (me included) benefit from the hard work involved.
I’d happily donate a percentage of my daily grc to The Admin if they would be so gracious to receive it, for all the hard work. Good idea? Any other volunteers?

Come in, share about how many tasks of yours have gone invalid, but remember none of this would be here if it wasn’t for The Admin, praise him.

Having said all that I’d like to ask The Admin if a resolution date is known? The loyal flock would find comfort in some knowledge.

Jon (Slicker) who is the one person shop running this project, has indicated he is working on some changes to filter out the hacker while taking care of the rest of us.

I just tried a test workunit (I did a full detach and install of Collatz) and completed a new work unit.

Sadly the same validation error.

What I don't understand is why the validator is not shutdown or even the whole project put on hold until this is fixed.

Yes, what I don't understand is that we don't get any information from slicker.
The whole project seems very amateurish to me.
I'm retiring a little disappointed.

Greetings to All,
Renato

I read somewhere down the thread that Jon is traveling this week for the Holiday. My tenure here is not as long as many of you.. Nonetheless, my experience from the last hack is Jon will do what is needed upon his return to get us made whole. Not good at it, but I am trying to exercise some patience. Jon deserves his time away just as much as any of us and shouldn't have to work 36 hours a day upon his return.

I'd rather he spend his time fixing the problem than replying to every post and spoon feeding us information. He has already stated he is working on it.

Until our Admin gets back from vacation and has a chance to work the validation issue one option is to "pause" new work from this project. If you are subscribed to this message thread you can watch for updates as they come out.

We all have back up projects or should have as there are plenty of good projects out there.

Everyone needs a holiday, though I’m sure a few of us have Collatz Fever and the only cure is valid work units. I just built another machine I have hopes it will be my primo single gpu machine. RX Vega 64 for about 6million a day in windows. Weirdly same gpu set up externally and running units on High Sierra/MacBook Pro knocks out 7 million a day!
I digress. Hope to see you all out there in the race for WU’s soon. X

I was enjoying being the Darwin King until that host turned up and knocked my old cheese graters off the top spot :(

Yours is bound to run faster in Widows though as us Mac OS users don’t have any software to boost performance.
