From June 5-15, the temporary Collatz system admin will be the cat sitter. That doesn't sound very reassuring does it? Sorry, but if the server goes down and requires anything other than a simple reboot, there may be an extended outage.

Unfortunately, the chances of that happening are higher than normal since Commonwealth Edison (a.k.a. ComEd, the electrical company in the area) failed to notify me on their original attempt to replace my power meter last week but were unable to do so since it evidently takes at least two people to do it. Since they didn't call before the last attempt, Murphy's Law suggests that they will not call before the next attempt and that it will take place while I am on vacation. The cat sitter doesn't know how to switch over to the generator if the outage exceeds the UPS battery so if the power is out for an extended period, Collatz may remain down until I get back.

PECO recently replaced my meter. The whole process left me without power for less than three minutes. My UPS hardly knew it had happened.

Let's hope . . .

When VEPCO replaced my power meter the guy walked up and pulled the meter while I was standing there talking to a neighbor, he never said a word! It also took less then 3 minutes, but I got no warning at all! The guy said they must replace the meter every 2 years to take it back and make sure it is within calibration specs so you don't get over or under charged. He said it is a Federal Law. He said people without fences get it done first, then they come back thru for those with fences.

The technician that came out was supposed to just swap it in under 5 minutes, but because of the way the wires come up from the ground, he said it would require a team of people with at least one licensed electrician and they would need to shut down the power at the transformer down the street in order to do the work.

Our meter hasn't been replaced in at least 15 years, so I doubt it is federal law unless the politicians just recently passed the law. They are changing out the old spinning dial for an electronic version so it is a big upgrade.

I had a power meter replaced a few months back.....not fun, especially when it is hot weather.

If I was in your neighborhood I could lend you an extra UPS battery and plug it in serial with yours for those ten days.

Either that or you have been real lucky, mine too is an electronic thing and they can read it from 20 yards away now. They just point their hand held box at the meter, the numbers show up and on the screen, they accept them and move on to the next house. Works great for homes with fences and animals.

Could be the guy was just full of it too, no idea really.

I'm glad the website and the server is finally back online.
