32-bit OpenCL 1.2 is faster than 64 bit OpenCL 2.0? Interesting.

To force it to use the 32 bit version, I think you would need to use an app_info.xml file so that you can refer to the specific executable you want to run.

I'm completely new to this, so can someone check my interpretations in layman's term:

verbose: doesn't matter. (1 = log stuff)

kernels_per_reduction: refresh rate. (higher = lower "refresh rate" = less time "refreshing" = better performance)

threads: not sure about this one. Doesn't seem to matter that much.

lut_size: make it so that 2^N <= GPU cache size. (my GT 330M doesn't have L2 cache so it doesn't matter?)

sleep: idle time. (less idling = better performance)

reduce_cpu: doesn't matter. (1 = use a bit more CPU instead of GPU)

sieve_size: The meat of the update. Increase until computation error / driver crashed.

My settings with a GeForce GT 330M:

verbose=1
kernels_per_reduction=48
threads=6
lut_size=10
sleep=1
reduce_cpu=0
sieve_size=27

Reboot. If other apps have the older C++ DLLs open, you will need to reboot before the new ones will be used.

Update the video driver to the latest version. That same error has been resolved for others by doing that -- even though the drivers they were running weren't all that old.

Got 100 or so results that did not validate last month so reluctantly have moved on to other (less paying) projects that don't seem to be in a constant state of flux.

You do a great job and I understand that constant optimization will prove/disprove the conjecture more quickly but frankly having to fiddle with config files, system setting, etc every few months is not worth the effort in my case.

I have run other projects for 10+ years without modifying a single file.

Possibly, you could have a "Collatz for Dummies" application that would just work for those of us that enjoy DC but don't have the time or inclination to keep up with the latest flavor of the month.

I haven't seen much discussion on optimizing the performance of the CPU WUs so I wanted to share what I've seen on my 2014 21.5" iMac. There are two parameters that appear to impact performance for CPU tasks:

    lut_size
    sieve_size



For my processor, lut_size=17 and sieve_size=27 provides a runtime reduction of 8-10% over the default settings, per WU.

The BOINC event log is to troubleshoot BOINC client problems. Your computer asks for work, gets work, processes the WUs, and returns them. Therefore the BOINC client is working OK and the BOINC event log is immaterial in this case.

Go to your account. Look at the invalid WUs. Click on one. You will see the log file for that WU with the error that occurred while processing that WU. The error is:

Error: (-54)Invalid work group size at 1692 of RunSteps


For example, take a look at http://boinc.thesonntags.com/collatz/result.php?resultid=27268400

That it logs at all tells me that it is not a C++ runtime error as that would cause it to fail prior to even writing the app data to stderr.

The error is from the OpenCL driver which, while not obvious, is telling you that your GPU is not powerful enough to handle the default settings. That means it will require you to optimize the settings for your GPU. Please edit the collatz_sieve*.config files in the project folder (c:\program data\boinc\projects\boinc.thesonntags.com_collatz\collatz_sieve_1.21_windows_intelx86__opencl_amd_gpu.config and c:\program data\boinc\projects\boinc.thesonntags.com_collatz\collatz_sieve_1.21_windows_x86_64_opencl_amd_gpu.config ) and delete anything in it now and add the following:

verbose=1
threads=5
kernels_per_reduction=4
sieve_size=20
lut_size=12
reduce_cpu=0
sleep=1

The problem is tons of ATI/AMD OCL temporary files (size 0 bytes).
I suggest to run EraseOCL.bat via scheduler every 60 minutes (if crunching MW or Collatz sieving). For other OCL apps is four hours enough.
erase C:\Users\<user_name>\AppData\Local\Temp\OCL*.tmp

"C:" is drive where the system is installed. Drivers newer than 13.9 produces this garbage.


Seems this problem is only with certain driver versions and is SUPPOSED to be corrected in the 15.11 drivers. However, I have not checked them all and the new Crimson drivers seem to crash all over the place...

I'm using ONLY Catalyst 15.3 Beta drivers now (15.4 having crashed all over) and do not see those files being created. BUT, 65535 of them were created when I tried to update to newer drivers a couple weeks ago.

Since I only BOINC on my 7970's, no need to update for now... works fine with 15.3 Beta.

On my GTX980s, I am seeing the 32-bit (i686) version running about 10 seconds per WU faster that the 64-bit (X86_64). The WUs seem to mostly run using the 64-bit, then a batch of 32-bit seemingly at random.

What would we need to use for the app_info.xml file to force using the 32-bit version?

i was wondering if it is possible to have different settings for each individual card in the Collatz....config file. im running GTX660, GTX660Ti and TeslaT10. currently, im running the following config giving 7min 5min.ish and 16min.ish accordingly.

cache_sieve=1
reduce_cpu=0
sieve_size=30

however, if lut_size=20 and holding others constant, yield 7min.ish 8min and 14min.ish accordingly. seeing the results not going in the same direction among GPUs for the same configuration lead me to think that it would be handy if each GPU can have its own config to best match its capability.

also, if i can improve the configuration to gain performance anywhere please let me know.

For CPUs and NV GPUs, lut_size=20 is recommended since they have better caching. However you should try it yourself to find the sweet spot.

For ATI GPUs (at least for GCN ones), the size of look-up table(lut) should be limited in accordance with the L2 cache, or the GPU has to find (some of) the entries in VRAM, which is very slow. For instance, the L2 of my HD 7850 is 512KB; one look-up table entry is 3*32-bit integer = 96 bits = 12 Bytes. So I can fit 512KB / 12B = 43K entries, about 2^15~2^16 (lut_size = 15~16).

Over the past couple months I've tweaked about 4 different cards to get nearly 40% more credit per day out of them over stock. 7970, 7870, gtx 560, 750ti, all have behaved the same in regards to how they earn more.

As I adjusted the .config file and run times fell also did the credit. And I could compare two WUs outputs and see that a stock run with an estimated 590 highest steps compared to an optimized run with the same steps would be far less credit.

If I'm getting the same work done in less time why isn't the credit the same? I thought there might be a runtime bonus like in the past pre-sieve. I ran two concurrently to increase the runtime but the results scaled the same as running solo.

The faster you get a card running the credit keeps dropping per completed WU, yes the speeds drop faster than the credit does so it is beneficial to optimize the cards but I wonder if there's something else I can do to bring the credit per WU back up.

Could you share how credit is determined, there seems to be more to it than highest or average steps?

Here are some of my experiences per setting:

verbose=1 Leave on so you can check your results

kernels_per_reduction=48 Very little effect, maybe smoother desktop/video the higher the better I think. I have yet to cause a crash with this setting.

threads=8 this is the most sensitive IMO, can't go over 8 on ati, seems to be best for most Nvidias, you might try 9 on a new 900 series.

lut_size=15 2nd most critical, Adjust up until times begin to slow down. I believe nvidia (especially maxwell) can be rather high, i have 17 on 750ti and 16 on 7870

sleep=0 haven't touched it

cache_sieve=1 haven't touched it

reduce_cpu=0 haven't touched it

sieve_size=30 third most critical, 30 is pretty high for most cards. I believe my 7970 ran at 30, 7870 at 29, 28 for the 750ti and 26 for gtx560. If you crank this down to like 24 and run and see your GPU utilization is sub 99% turn this up until it you're at 99% or crash.

It is amazing, thx all for your configs! I've reduce the WU time a lot.

I have a lot of WU which needs 110 Sec. and very less which need 50 sec.

How i can find out the Version (32bit, 64-bit)?

And PUSH: What would we need to use for the app_info.xml file to force using the 32-bit version? :-)

I have very little experience with configuring app_info.xml It's usually trial and error and copy paste. You're going to need to know the name of the 32bit app file, in the case below its the 32bit app for nvidia on windows.

collatz_sieve_1.21_windows_intelx86__opencl_nvidia_gpu.exe

I'm not sure if you'll need to reference the .config file in the app_info, i doubt it as the app naturally calls for the .config

so maybe it would look something like this (using old prima), please don't copy this and expect it to work without issue.
