Slicker, please do NOT touch anything. Things are finely running very smoothly and with a good drop in the turnaround time. :-)

Message 21257 - Posted: 8 Sep 2015, 21:48:47 UTC - in response to Message 21255.

After applying the suggested upgrade, I am still getting the same error: http://boinc.thesonntags.com/collatz/result.php?resultid=22059898 .

Two things to check:
1. It is running the 32-bit or 64-bit version of the app? Did you install BOTH the 32 bit and 64 bit runtimes? If you only installed the 64-bit version, try setting the no_alt_platform in the cc_config to force BOINC to only get 64-bit apps. That, or use an app_config.xml so that it only runs the 64-bit versions. Or, install the 32-bit C++ runtime as well. (They can both be installed at the same time.)

If that isn't doesn't fix it, change the cache setting to sieve_cache=0 in the config and see if that works. I found a bug this morning while working on the CPU apps where the 64-bit app crashes when trying to read the sieve file created by the 32-bit app.

Message 21284 - Posted: 14 Sep 2015, 17:11:59 UTC - in response to Message 21257.

Hello,

Please, is it possible to have more than 200 Work Units ?
Because, when the Collatz server is down, I only have 3 hours in advance of work units. 40 seconds for one WU...
So my computer don't have something to calculate for a long part of time when the server is down.

how do you get 200 I get 100 and I think server limit is 100 ?

I do not know, I did nothing, it happened by itself.
I have no control over that.
In Boinc Manager, I just put my worklist application to the maximum, that is to say 10 days.
In fact, I need 2000 Work Units (for a whole day) and not only 200.

Sometimes tasks are running 'endless' not using the GPU:

If you use settings that are too high for the GPU such that the kernel takes more than 33 seconds to execute, Windows assumes the process is hung and resets the video driver. The application doesn't know that Windows did this so it is waiting for the kernel to finish running on the GPU but that never happens because Windows killed the process. Reduce the sieve_size by 1 and see if that solves the problem. If not, reduce it some more.

It happens very rarely, but when and if not at the machine, you're loosing a lot of crunching time. Thus I'll follow your advice. Thanks!

Message 21385 - Posted: 2 Oct 2015, 7:57:05 UTC

My old WUs ended at night. The sieve WUs begun. They all ended with error.

In the morning I saw that and updated VS 2012 runtime. Downloaded new tasks, and again they all ended with error. After that I googled some more and upgraded video driver (video card is AMD Radeon R7 260X).

But now BOINC client does not load Collatz tasks anymore. Am I banned because of errors or what? Will my status be restored with time?

One more question. Let's see any task which ended with error. For example
http://boinc.thesonntags.com/collatz/result.php?resultid=24572822
There are lines

ModLoad: 0000000000150000 000000000004d000 C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\boinc.thesonntags.com_collatz\collatz_sieve_1.21_windows_intelx86__opencl_amd_gpu.exe (-nosymbols- Symbols Loaded)
Linked PDB Filename : D:\Source\CollatzSieveV1\Release\collatz_sieve_1.21_windows_intelx86__opencl_nvidia_gpu.pdb

Is it normal that AMD GPU client is linked with Nvidia GPU pdb?

By the way, for x64 application it's the same.

Did you reboot after installing the c++ runtimes? Could you add the line verbose=1 to the collatz_sieve config file(s)? That will give a little more information. My hunch is that the sieve size may need to be reduced. At least that's one possibility. The error is basically access denied when trying to write to a memory location. So either it isn't allocating the memory and thus can't write to it, or it is occurring somewhere else.

work group size is related to sieve_size and threads. Try setting threads=6 and sieve_size=20 in the collatz_sieve config file(s). If that works, increase one or the other by 1 and run the next WUs. Keep increasing by 1 until it fails or video response is poor and then back it off by 1. Then do the same with the other one. Make sure you have verbose=1 set as well so that you can review the times and settings in the output.

I did a reboot after installing the runtimes (I reboot both machines at least once every 24h).

I assume the "verbose=1" goes to both the 32- & 64-bit files, so I'm adding it to both.

Looks like the server is getting hammered by work requests and status requests -- it is impossible to get to server status, requests for new work get a 'no work available' and further it seems that credits have stalled in the past hour or so.

In as much as the server is almost non-responsive (I'm guessing due to excessive requests), and the validator is not functioning at the moment, I figure to temporarily suspend Collatz for a bit and revert back to some other projects that are not under the serious stress that Collatz is today.

One hopes there will be a follow up to indicate server health changes later in the day.
