I have a mining rig that has two power supplies, 1000 watts and 1250 watts, and the system uses under 1500 watts of power at 120 volts (12.5 amps) according to my Kill-a-Watt meter. Since an adequate UPS with a rating of 3000 VA costs about $1000, I settled for a $25 Belkin surge protector rated 15 amps.

After about a week, the surge protector was hot enough to cause an odor and it was hot to the touch. I removed it from the system.

My point: It is good practice to use a surge protector at about 50% of its rated amperage. I was near 83.3% continuously.

Good idea!!

For around $200 you can get an electrician to put a whole house surge suppressor installed in your main electrical panel box and you can forgo the need for individual ones for each pc. It won't stop a lightening strike hitting your home and destroying things, but my next door neighbors house got hit by lightening and all of my electronics and pc's are fine, but several of my neighbors lost pc's etc because of the surge going thru the line.

Thank you! I had not realized how inexpensive whole house breakers are. I am going to get this one. My brother is an electrician, so that reduces my cost to parts and sweet tea.
