I have taken up the challenge issued by TL and I have started the new thread.

Simple rules for this game:
1. As the author of this thread, I get to decide who wins; the game could be limited by time or by the number of posts.
2. As the author of this thread, I don't get to win the game.
3. Double posts can't be used to win the game.

Good luck!

Thank you for taking up the mantle, David. 😀😃😄😁

I will Post for as long as I have RAC to Post with.
Maybe today is the last day, I don't know....

Good Luck everyone. Happy Crunching!
I wish I COULD Crunch, but NOT on my
Hackintosh System.

TL, thanks for posting - we'll miss you around here. Consider crunching a Collatz CPU task once in a while just to keep your RAC high enough to qualify for posting privileges.

And jeffwy, thank you for posting, too. Maybe we can stir things up enough to get a little interest going in this thread.

David,

I will miss everyone around here, too. It just DOESN'T make sense
to burn out GPUs, (at the GREAT cost of them), just because I believe
MacOS to be a Superior, and MORE Stable Environment than Winblows.
(AND, I STILL believe this.) I just wish that MacOS would open up to more
third party Software Developers to ENABLE the ability to BETTER control
GPU Fan Speeds in MacOS. (Apple seems to NOT want to do this; however.)

As Mikey points out, that YES, I DO have my Dual Boot capability back to Win 7 Pro x64,
BUT WHY should I have to choose to run MacOS by Day, AND then close that out at 5:50 PM
just to Crunch in Windows at 6:00 PM to 9:00 AM every night??? It WOULD become a hassle
to maintain that operation. I truly HAVE NOT been back into Win 7 on my System since
getting the Hackintosh side Up, Running, and Perfected to where I want it to be.

AND, with SETI now gone, my 'need' to Crunch has dwindled. Collatz was a GOOD substitute
while it lasted, but IT DID damage the Compute Cores on the 1070 due to the lack of MacOS
GPU Fan Control. So, while it's NOT Collatz' fault, I just CANNOT put good money after
bad and continue to replace $500 MacVidCards' priced GPUs when they get damaged by
MacOS lack of GPU Fan Control....

I DON'T have that kind of money to continue to put in. I consider myself VERY lucky to have
been able to make room on the Credit Card for the ONE 1070. I CANNOT make room for another.

I wish all of you well, and Happy Crunching in whatever Projects you all maintain Crunching on.

God Bless,

TL

I can't agree with you more that the "cheese-grater" MacPros (1,1 -> 5,1) are no longer appealing platforms for crunching. My recent modification to my MacPro 3,1 notwithstanding, I have been de-emphasizing my MacPros. It's been easier, and in many respects less expensive, to add an external GPU to MacMinis, iMacs, and MacBook Pros, even units with only Thunderbolt 1 ports. Most importantly, many of my software applications at work are no longer being supported by Mac OS X 10.11 (El Capitan), the most recent version of Mac OS X that runs on the Mac 3,1. This is a real pity, as I still have 2 MacPro 3,1s at home and 5 more at work.

Well, thanks to inspiration from IDEA, I have changed some of my thinking on upgrading MacPro 5,1 units. I have installed Thunderbolt 3 PCI cards in two of my units. This allows me to connect the MP 5,1 to an eGPU. More details to follow.

Installed TB3 cards on three MacPro 5,1 boxes, all running Mojave. I connected each of the cards to one or two AMD GPUs via Akitio or Sonnet enclosures. Two boards failed after almost one year of use. The failed boards were connected to two AMD GPUs, making me believe that the cards weren't designed to handle that much bandwidth. Coupled with the inability to run more recent versions of the macOS, I am abandoning the MacPro 5,1 as a platform for cheap, expandable, Mac computing. Instead, my daily driver here at home is a $600 hex core i5 MacMini connected to two 4K displays, a RAID, and three AMD GPUs.

I just got a Mac Pro 3.1 setup including monitor, a dell keyboard and a dell mouse, I did buy a Mac keyboard, all for $360 on Facebooks Marketplace, it's wifi which works for me right now as I'm in between homes and am renting and only have wifi as an option. It's not fast but has 2 quad cores but the gpu is not able to crunch in Boinc. It also only came with 8gb of ram so I bought 16gb more to put in when it gets here hopefully today or tomorrow. I have an AMD 5770 out of a Mac I was givien but it's in storage and I can't get to it until late Fall due to the availability of parts to build new homes right now, fortunately my prices are locked in so I won't see any price increases.
