That sounds OK.

Have you also d/loaded the specific ATI application for collatz and made sure all the libs are in the correct place?

The app can be found here:

http://boinc.thesonntags.com/collatz/power_apps.php

Depending on your arch then the 32 or 64 bit are here.

There is a readme inside the dir that tells you how to make sure everything is in the right place.

Quick reply as it is getting a bit late here :-)

Do you have the propriety drivers for the ATI installed?

You will need those for it to process on the card.

Also make sure that the fgrlx is loaded "Before" BOINC is, the one from the BOINC website which is just a single dir in your /home/"somewhere" and run from there is OK, but if you use a different one ( like I do for SuSE, comes from a repo ) it tends to start before the GUI as daemon when the machine boots and so the needed ATI stuff is not loaded and therefore I do not even have the option of GPU in the BOINC "Activity" menu unless I quit BOINC, stop the service and then start again after the ATI's have loaded ( init 5/GUI logon on SuSE )

This does not bother me much as my machines run 24/7 so once done it only needs doing again if I shutdown for maintenance ( kernel update and/or defluffing to get the bunnies out )

:-)

There are a couple of ways round this.

Let us know if you need more.

3) Message boards : Number crunching : 6850 performance? (Message 10516)
Posted 2608 days ago by baskitcaise
I forgot to mention that with the 6870 there are no official drivers ( Linux or windows ) yet that support the card so I am using the older 10.10's, the 10.11's will not work on either O/S.

There are special 10.10e ( yep that is an "e" on the end ) windows drivers if you go to the ati/amd site, other than that you have to wait for the 10.12's, so my card shows as "Unknown Hardware" and probably is not performing at its best right now.

However it played Crysis fine when I was in windows earlier but do not run BOINC on there:-)

For comparison my old 4830 which I have moved to an older tri core Phenom box has just run its first unit in 30 mins and 14 secs and that is on the same desktop settings under OpenSuSE 11.3 with the 10.10's

4) Message boards : Number crunching : ATI 9.12 / Linux64 / BOINC problem... (Message 10515)
Posted 2608 days ago by baskitcaise
I have just gone through this with my old card (4830), I have just put it in a machine that had not run any GPU apps before on OpenSuSE 11.3 with the 10.10 Cat's and found that the cc_config file was missing from the BOINC dir.

If this is not there then create one ( plain txt file ) called cc_config with the contents something like this:

<--------------------snip----------------->

<cc_config>
<options>
<no_gpus>0</no_gpus>
<use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>
</options>
</cc_config>

<--------------end snip------------------>

Obviously without the "snip" lines.

Now those are the options for my single 4830, then restart the client and run the manager have a look in the log file and you should see something along the lines of:

ATI GPU 0: ATI Radeon HD 4700/4800 (RV740/RV770) (CAL version 1.4.838, 512MB, 50GFLOPS peak)

And you should be able to see the GPU options in the Activity menu.

HTH

The only messing I had to do was to the default dirs that the sysconfig file was pointing to but I think that maybe down to SuSE.( I have it in my home dir but not under the default "BOINC" which threw it a bit :-)

Cannot say for a 6850 but I have just this last hour come back with a new 6870 running on the linux client ( OpenSuSE 11.3 ) Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor [Family 16 Model 4 Stepping 3] @3500 with BOINC running other w/u's on the CPU at the same time and with no optimisations ( default settings ) I am getting approx turnover of about 11 mins 30 secs per WU.

However I am using the machine for browsing and other stuff as well and a shed load of fancy desktop whizz bang GUI whistles & bells running with only a slight degradation of speed on the desktop.

6) Message boards : Unix/Linux : Dual screen errors ATI app (Message 9564)
Posted 2692 days ago by baskitcaise
I have been running the ATI (experimental 2.01 ) app for a while now and every once in a while I get the problem of the computation error usually after watching a video or online media , usually a quick logout and login again works, sometimes I need to drop to init 3 and reload the fglrx module before starting KDE ( with or without effects ) but then it will run fine.

Today I have just stuck a second monitor on my ATI 4830 card and now there seems no way to get the app to run without errors, the screens are configured as an extended desktop one left of other.

Here is the output from the BOINC manager:

This is on OpenSuSE 11.2 with KDE 4.5.1 ( which still works fine in single monitor mode ) and the latest ATI 10.8 from ATI site.

Any ideas please?

For the momment I have had to disable the app.
