1) Message boards : News : Invite Code (Message 23449)
Posted 417 days ago by Profile Beyond
So I'm a current user with slightly over 35,000,000 credits, do I need an invite code? If I add a new machine does that need an invite code (it would start with zero credits) I run some instances in docker containers, occasionally I need to rebuild them which creates a new instance to replace an existing one (usually with the same name) does that require an invite code?

Hi Ray. Slicker answered your question 2 messages up:

"You only need the invite code to set up a new account. If you have ever attached to Collatz in the past, you already have an account. Adding a new host doesn't require the invitation code. In other words, if you can post to this message board, you already have an account and don't need the invitation code. If a friend wants to join, you can contact me via PM or they can email me. My address is at the bottom of every page. (Yes, I get lots of spam in my email because of it.)"

11.11.2016 23:42:40 | Collatz Conjecture | [error] Signature verification failed for collatz_sieve_1.21_windows_x86_64__opencl_nvidia_gpu.config
11.11.2016 23:42:40 | Collatz Conjecture | [error] Checksum or signature error for collatz_sieve_1.21_windows_x86_64__opencl_nvidia_gpu.config

I would love to know how BOINC can have a signature error on a file that is empty.
What BOINC client version are you using?

Looking at his machines, here's an example:

<core_client_version>7.6.22</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
app_version download error: couldn't get input files:
<file_xfer_error>
<file_name>collatz_sieve_1.21_windows_x86_64__opencl_nvidia_gpu.config</file_name>
<error_code>-120 (RSA key check failed for file)</error_code>
<error_message>signature verification failed</error_message>
</file_xfer_error>

</message>

https://boinc.thesonntags.com/collatz/get_project_config.php

Copy and past the link into your browser and then you tell me. It works 100% of the time when I do it.

This worked on all my remaining non-working boxes. Thanks!

Yes, Chris, this is a real head-scratcher. I just reset/powered down all my equipment (even the network servers for this part of town) for 15 minutes to be sure everything was flushed out.. even flushed dns before and after power up of machines. But, to no avail.
Slicker... I still get the same responses to all ip and ns commands.
One thing that is also common - When asking for a Collatz update on a machine that works, after the "update requested by user" message, boinc comes back with a response of "Sending scheduler request: Requested by user." On a machine that does NOT work, the response boinc comes back with is "Fetching scheduler list". After THAT message, you know it isn't going to work.
Alienpower... That's what we are trying to figure out.

A head scratcher it is. Here's more: on a machine that didn't work I just did a drivecopy to an SSD (migrated the OS and D drive to a new drive). After booting with the new drive (should be an exact copy), I added Collatz (yes it worked now) and it proceeded to DL new WUs. I have no idea why this should all of a sudden make it work. Any ideas anyone?

From a command prompt, what does "nslookup boinc.thesonntags.com" report?

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: boinc.thesonntags.com
Address: 73.75.172.167

On Windows to flush your DNS, do this:

Press the start button, if you have a search box type into it, if not just type:

cmd (press enter)

ipconfig /flushdns (press enter)

This will flush your DNS; however I personally did that days ago and it did not make any difference.

Chris

Flushing the DNS and restarting the router doesn't help here either.
Still can't attach new/detached computers or DL or return work.
Have run Collatz for years, now can't. What's the answer?

Just to clarify, there seems to be 3 different problems with Collatz at the moment.

1. Clients that have added the project but cannot download new WU's.
2. Clients that have yet to add the project, and cannot due to the client reporting "Failed to add project".
3. And those that have crunched WU's, but cannot connect their BAM Boincstats account to Collatz, with BAM saying "No response from project".

If I poll for work the last few days I always get (on all machines):

Collatz Conjecture 11/8/2016 9:09:15 AM update requested by user
Collatz Conjecture 11/8/2016 9:09:17 AM Fetching scheduler list
----- 11/8/2016 9:09:20 AM Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
----- 11/8/2016 9:09:23 AM Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.

And of course no new machines can be added.

Give it a try, check if u have the last boinc version, if not download it, install it and please let us know.
Regards, Gerlando

Hi Gerlando. That's not it. We have the latest BOINC versions. The certificate for the website needs to be replaced.

I can't say it will work but if you click on All Versions when you go to Download Boinc you will see this: 7.6.33 Development version
I've been using that since it came out and have had zero problems with it, but as I said I do NOT know if it will work around the SSL problems or not.

It won't. I already tried that even though I knew it wouldn't work...

I agree, somthing's wrong as the BOINC manager will not down-load any new work following a fresh install on one of my machines which has previously been running for a few years on this project :(

My machines aren't currently getting any Collatz work at all, new install or not.
11) Message boards : News : Switching To CreditNew (Message 19082)
Posted 1373 days ago by Profile Beyond
The majority of BOINC projects are using CreditNew and includes all the largest projects. After much deliberation and more than a few run-ins with the credit cops, Collatz will switch to the CreditNew system beginning tomorrow.

Cocoa salutes this move and has dragged his abacus out from under the couch. Previously used exclusively for determining frequency, number and hourly distribution of daily treats, he has now set about calculating his first Collatz WU. He asks your patience and requests an extended deadline...
12) Message boards : Number crunching : Should solo_collatz run on 4770? (Message 16798)
Posted 1681 days ago by Profile Beyond
Yes, the HD 4770 supports OpenCL 1.0. You also have to use a driver version that supports OpenCL. That said you'll get faster results running the Collatz v2.09 app and waiting for the wingman. The 4770 was the testbed for the 40nm process and uses a newer chip than the 4870. It runs about the same speed as a 4850 but uses much lass energy.

You're very welcome. Sometimes it's beneficial to hang out on the mailing lists. I was there trying to get a fix for the long standing "work fetch with GPU exclusions and app_info" bug. Saw this "not requesting work, project not highest priority" problem and requested a fix from DA. He didn't want to change the default behavior so I asked if a cc_config option was possible. He came up with the "fetch on update" flag. BTW, he fixed the "work fetch with GPU exclusions and app_info" too. That was a tough one to track down and required major changes. So thanks David for both fixes!

BTW, someone else to thank is Jacob Klein, who's lately been doing more testing on BOINC bugs than anyone. I'd say he's been instrumental in helping to track down many of the problems in the 7.0.x series and one of the reasons why 7.1.x is looking so good at such an early stage. So thanks Jacob, and let's not forget Rom too!

Try putting: <fetch_on_update>1</fetch_on_update> in your cc_config.xml and restart BOINC.

One person suggests a change and the developers change the default BOINC behavior with little or no discussion. Then, the volunteers think something is wrong with the project because of it. I find that very frustrating. I'm also sure it won't be the last time it happens. Thanks for providing the work around so that the needs of the one no longer outweigh the needs of the many.

You're very welcome. This behavior (Not requesting tasks: project is not highest priority) was quite irritating and it took a reasonable amount of prodding to get the workaround. But it was provided and it helps. Hopefully the default situation is being improved in BOINC 7.1.x. The round robin work requests would get stuck on some misc project in 7.0.x and it would take forever for the situation to become resolved. So far work fetch in 7.1.3 seems to be working better. The above was not the only work fetch bug in the current "stable" 7.0.64 (there were many) and the bugs are still being rooted out.

The good part: I wasn't sent any CPU or Nvidia/AMD GPU tasks.
The bad part: I wasn't sent any Intel GPU tasks.

This is what I get:

5/29/2013 3:38:38 PM | Collatz Conjecture | Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks
5/29/2013 3:38:38 PM | Collatz Conjecture | No tasks sent
5/29/2013 3:38:38 PM | Collatz Conjecture | Tasks for CPU are available, but your preferences are set to not accept them
5/29/2013 3:38:38 PM | Collatz Conjecture | Tasks for NVIDIA GPU are available, but your preferences are set to not accept them
5/29/2013 3:38:38 PM | Collatz Conjecture | Tasks for AMD/ATI GPU are available, but your preferences are set to not accept them

Is "Use Intel GPU" checked? Also you might try checking the AMD/ATI box and see what happens.

Also, when manually updating:

5/29/2013 3:38:59 PM | Collatz Conjecture | Not requesting tasks: project is not highest priority

Try putting: <fetch_on_update>1</fetch_on_update> in your cc_config.xml and restart BOINC.

This is great. However, I have a question. How can I set up one of my computers to run Collatz tasks on the HD 4000, but also allow the GTX 670 to continue crunching another project (GPUGRID)?

I believe that you can just uncheck "Use NVIDIA GPU" in your project preferences from your account page. That's the way I do it to run my ATI/AMD GPUs here (or elsewhere) and the NVidia GPUs at GPUGrid.

Nice first post. Personally I think you should run whatever project you like and probably not worry about what other people want to do with their machines and their electricity. If your goal is to change the world we could perhaps help you to make a list of important issues to work on, but only if you promise to follow the list (in order). Regards ;-)
20) Message boards : News : v4.07 Released for Windows (Message 16523)
Posted 1707 days ago by Profile Beyond
Tried v4.07 on 3 different 7xxx GPUs. Times:

HD 7770 @ 1050MHz: 45:21 @ 97% usage
HD 7790 @ 1100MHz: 35:38 @ can't say, on my 7790 GPUs the Afterburner usage graph constantly bounces between 0% & 100% for all apps (WCG, Einstein, Collatz)

HD 5850 at various speeds, even underclocked always returned computation error 5 (via Boinctasks)

Have some times now for the new HD 7850, it only ran at 87% with one WU so running 2x and percent GPU usage in the upper 90s:

HD 7850 @ 1000MHz: average of 56:00 for 2 WUs, so 28:00/WU

As I remember, that's about as fast as a 5870 with the v2.09 app (with about 1/2 the power usage).
