1) Message boards : Number crunching : Longer Sieve WUs (Message 23612)
Posted 396 days ago by numbermaniac
I'm not too happy about the massive size increase. These tasks used to take about 25 minutes on my Intel GPU; even though it heated it up quite a bit, I was ok running one task every so often, since it was a fairly short burst. But now it's predicting 3 hours for this task to complete, and I'm not too keen on having the computer run at high temperature for that long...
2) Message boards : Number crunching : During yesterday's database error, my phone was cloned about 28 times. How do I get rid of them? (Message 22219)

If I go to my task list now I see about 28 Micro Collatz tasks assigned to duplicates of my phone. I think they were all created during the database outage yesterday. Going into merge computers by name doesn't work since they all have the same domain name. How do I get rid of these ~28 clone computers, and the task assigned to each of them? Thanks.

When I look at your hosts, your phone only shows up once. Did you find a way to merge them?

That's the weird thing, the phone only shows up once in the list of hosts. I tried merging, but it doesn't seem to work, because they all have the same domain name. But in my list of tasks, each of these tasks is assigned to a different computer number.

It's stuffed me up even further. Due to the error, when my phone contacted the server it couldn't find my phone in my computer list and apparently it's created a new CPID for me. Now it says my phone has generated 0 credit, but the total credit still seems to be correct.

OpenCL tasks on my Intel GPU are giving this in the output after turning on verbose=1. Is it not supported in Collatz Sieve?

screw google.. get a cert from verisign... unless google owns them now too.... :/

Not Google, but the SSL service was bought by Symantec.

Ok, that explains why my Norton Security suite wouldn't allow me to proceed to the website, I went anyway and it doesn't argue with me about it now. I thought it might be something like this.

Norton still tells me that this website has malware. I have to click the "continue to site anyway" link on each visit.
8) Message boards : Number crunching : WU's for CPU on Windows? (Message 21935)
Posted 739 days ago by numbermaniac
Any idea on the Gflops or the ETA for each WU?

Collatz Sieve tasks are 52,167,488 GFLOPs according to the BOINC Manager. They take about 20-30 hours when I ran them on CPU. On my Intel GPU they take 1-2 hours.

When does this list get updated? I'm pretty sure it has many updates to it.

That is the all time list, it will get updated when someone exceeds or matches the highest total steps that has been currently crunched.

Equal to or Higher than any previous.

It is getting closer, we just had this yesterday....

I see. Will the entire list get updated or just the top number?

Ah, true. Have you unchecked Collatz Sieve in your allowed tasks?
11) Message boards : Number crunching : GPU tasks just don't care about being suspended (Message 21932)
Posted 739 days ago by numbermaniac
Does anyone know why this is happening?

Go into the Boinc Manager, down by the clock, and click on Activity and make sure the "run based on preferences" AND "use gpu based on preferences" is checked.

Yeah they're both checked.

According to http://boinc.thesonntags.com/collatz/apps.php, Micro is only available for Android and Raspberry Pi.

I'm fairly sure any Collatz Sieve tasks that can be run on GPU can also run on CPU.
17) Message boards : Number crunching : GPU tasks just don't care about being suspended (Message 21885)
Posted 748 days ago by numbermaniac
When the CPU becomes too busy, BOINC will usually suspend all tasks momentarily. But for some reason, Collatz on my Intel GPU just keeps running. The status says suspended as it should, but the progress % is still going up. Eh??

400+ Seconds for a WU on the Titan Z. I would send them back.

Don't worry. I'm currently working on a more computing intensive (at least 2.5x) sieve app which adopts the 256-step sieve instead of the 32-step one currently used. And it generates 2.5 million times more 'science' than the one without sieve. BTW, it also consumes much less GPU RAM which is a good news.

Sounds promising!

WTF is with your computers ?! My tasks take ~60 minutes on the Nvidia GPU, ~2-3 hours on Intel GPU and up to 30 hours on CPU. How do all of you get those tasks done in minutes?!!!!!

The easy answer is that your GTX 740 only has CUDA Cores: 384, while his Titan has CUDA Cores: 5760, the more Cuda cores the faster your gpu crunches, add in that he has 12gb of memory while yours has has between 2 and 4gb of on board ram and his gpu is just more powerful than yours is.

My own AMD 7970 which has 3gb of on board ram and 2048 Cuda cores estimates it will take 3:46 to finish one unit. My other gpu here is my Nvidia 560Ti which has 384 Cuda cores and 1gb of on board memory is doing the units in just under 15 minutes each.

In short while your Nvidia 740 is plenty capable the newer gpu's are faster and more powerful. To make yours run faster are you leaving a cpu core free just to feed the gpu? If not try it and see if that helps, sometimes it does and sometimes the effect is minimal, each system is different.

I only use 2/4 cores for BOINC, so there should be still be one or two for the GPU.
