Perhaps a more draconian approach of downing and powering off the server, then restarting in sequence might sneeze the problem.

Or, perhaps it simply takes time to for the certificate update to propagate through the internet.

Or perhaps the manually updated cert didn't take or is not classed as legit.

Just some rambling as we come up on a full day of the outage.

I think we are pretty much all letting you know. Looks like perhaps a full server reboot to make what ever is out there get out of the way.

That would explain why the server status says fine but no uploads or downloads or reporting is going on. That's the current situation.

Server status says everything is fine.

IT IS NOT

Same problem here -- it isn't just you

Weird though -- the message base is intact

Mikey -- indeed -- although as we know, Collatz is a one person shop and so this sort of thing might be something of a burden.

Yeah -- or alternatively, update the home page here to provide an active download link (which won't be a Microsoft site unfortunately).

Microsoft didn't version name their code for this so the files are vc_redist_x64 and vcredist_x86.

One could search specifically for the 2012 versions of these files. There are a number of sites which suggest they have them....

One of the other issues presented by the seeming requirement of the specific C++ 2012 version is the implication for any people seeking to join the project or add new workstations.

It won't be an issue for me as I have carefully saved off the 2012 C++ files on my server.

But it seems absent a recode which removes the specific version dependency, folks are going to be frustrated in their efforts to add new workstations.

OK, I appear to have solved the problem on my miscreant workstation.

For whatever reasons, one specifically needs the 2012 C++ redistributable.

Also for whatever reasons, that puppy is not available from Microsoft or nearly any other site.

I tracked down the files 32 bit and 64 bit.

I then uninstalled the 2013 redistributables (which the current nvidia drivers install) as you can not install an older version with newer iterations installed.

I then installed the 2012 c++ pair and voila Collatz now runs -- it is 4 minutes into an 80 minute run for a GTX 750ti

As I understand it, I can install newer versions of the C++ redistributable.

My **guess** is that the code in Collatz specifically needs to find the 2012 version to be happy.

I suspect that a rewrite of the collatz code to live with newer installed versions when 2012 is not found would be a more global solution since Microsoft has made the 2012 version unavailable.

I suspect those were Windows 10 updates -- Windows 10 is evil stuff -- I though Win 8.1 was bad but Win 10 makes it look mellow.

I have decided that I have one workstation which will never run Collatz again.

It is now running Windows 7.0 SP1 fully patched, latest nvidia driver, 2015 C++, and BOINC 7.6.33

I did the full uninstall of C++, the nvidia drivers, BOINC -- a few times.

All give the same immediate computation error with Collatz -- and only with Collatz.

I shifted out a card between two systems -- the one which Collatz won't run on now has the GTX 750 -- I sent the GTX 1050ti to the other system.

I figure I'm done with fiddling on the system at this point -- no options available.

Perhaps someone will look at this thread and offer some other magic bullet.

Here is the link for the 2015 C++ from the Microsoft site:

Yup -- I get that Microsoft - no longer available -- perhaps one of these days Microsoft will get a clue regarding how to maintain their download site <sigh>

One can track down the files on the web -- but going to Microsoft's download page SHOULD be the way to do this.

That being said, I've encountered the SAME issue with reinstall of a Win 7 professional system -- and this after doing the a clean resinstall of the C++ stuff -- 2013 and/or 2017.

Not sure what is going on here.

Perhaps after deploying the full set of post SP1 updates to Win 7 things will work again.

Like you for me it is specifically Collatz.

I am dealing with a Windows 7 crash which required a full reinstall of Windows 7 professional 64 bit from scratch.

I have the OS installed -- with SP1 (I'm downloading the gazillion updates to Windows 7 as I type this).

I then installed the current Nvidia Driver for a GTX 750 .

I then installed BOINC. When I installed Collatz to work with the video card it downloaded work units and immediately generated computation errors.

I've tried multiple version of the C++ redistributable but know from other workstations that the 2013 should work just fine (it's what the Nvidia driver deploys).

Is there any advice regarding a solution here.

GPUGrid and PrimeGrid GPU processing work fine with this new install.

OK -- so the database server appears to be in almost daily crash mode.

Perhaps a sense of the underlying problem and what is on offer to 'make it good'??

OK -- so we know that at the moment, the database server is fragile or unstable.

Perhaps a sense of whether or not the light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming train?

Slicker, I suspect the daily server crashes resulting in extended outages have got to quite a bit more frustrating for you than we mere clients.

Do you have some thoughts on the problem source and potential solutions?

Then again, at the moment it appears the server is in 'fragile' mode...

But getting to those really high numbers would require the system to run consistently for a long time <smile>

I figure by the end of next year I might make it to Captain.

Then again, we all know an E9 is a higher operational rank than a major <smile>

It seems perhaps that the major maintenance fixed some things but at the same time has left a degree of server instability in place. I recall perhaps about a year ago the Collatz server was in something approaching a weekly crash mode.

Seems we're back in that place at the moment.
