More credit means more help for science

That and badges are meaningless I suppose when your rac is over 15 million, I noticed you have another project you contributed over 5 billion credits too. I don't do it for badges my next is so far away, I crunch for the science my credits I like for my team The PC Perspective Killer Frogs and I found this mascot depiction on stats site years ago

I have not been paying attention to my computer or the large collatz situation

89,204.66 3,737.60 225,945.32
93,020.78 4,245.71 231,099.58

but 230,000 credits for 1 day using an ATI 5870, I have since somehow managed to get my second 5870 running and currently have 2 large jobs running

both using 0.945 CPUs + 1 AMD/ATI GPU

both are currently just under 23 hours elapsed time with 5 hours remaining but they are not even 34% complete

but under properties it estimates the job size's as 208669952 GFLOPS

since I run 24/7 it's not a problem on my video cards anyway not always cpu

I don't think they will ever sort out the credits problems way too many variables. I started out with a GTX 260 but quickly moved to a pair of GTX 295's
my next system was 3 5870's with only 2 running currently. Is it just me or do the seti folks complain a lot, and I don't mean that as a diss really but I think collatz takes a lot of heat because of what it is doing, it's not doing medical research, or advancing our knowledge of the universe, but we have all chosen it for a reason and it's not all about credits I hope, for me seti just holds no interest, radio-astronomy does hard not too when an ex-girlfriend (1978-1988) had an older sister with a PhD from Yale and optical was dead in the early 80's, except in Hawaii which she did visit as well as the huge dish is South America, I read her thesis "Evolution of Galaxies" after graduation she worked on the VLA in desert of Arizona I believe. SETI and other massive ground based radio-astronomy project would be in major trouble if it was not for the public, who do you think crunches all the data. SETI US is even a a valid charity (money only) for Canadians who have to donate through U.C. Berkeley, as we have nothing here and it receives zero government funding even in the US I think, my ex's sister got her Master's in Physics from U. of Toronto but had to go south of the border for PhD.

My background is a B.SC. in statistics with a keen interest in Astronomy I took 2 courses while at University, my brother was on the dive recovery team for I forget the name but a Canadian entry into the X-Prize which Mr. Branson won. Ours was a land launched water recovery based system, and they had reached the drop the capsule in lake Ontario stage from over a mile high (no occupant's), so final stages. I also have a relative who became a Member of the French Academy of Science in 1749 and was made Professioner Geometrician in 1770

Keep crunching and we earn our credits

It's totally normal in my experience, I have 447,000 credits pending currently and I know I will get them as soon as they are confirmed, in fact under Application Details it gives some good numbers as far as your how jobs are going such as number of tasks completed, ave. processing rates and number of consecutive valid tasks for each type of job, collatz mini_collatz etc.

I had stopped crunching for a while but am getting back into it and looking to do some upgrades. I am doing 375,000/day and am 1,650,000 short of 50 Million so should hit it soon.

I am looking to pull 2 old Nvidia 295's from a machine I never use and replace them, but have not kept up with the tech since I bought 3 5870's (one needs to be returned life time warranty)a few years ago when they came out, any suggestions?

System to upgrade has 2 GTX 295's to be replaced on an ASUS RAMPAGE II EXTREME motherboard with an i7 920 processor, 6 gigs of Ram, power supply is 900w and a good one but don't recall model, cooling is currently a huge Noctus beast but I have an H50 water cooler in a box I never installed so will replace the beast, since I am not restricted to nvidia but can also use ati cards any suggestions are welcome.

I am not running 2 5970's but have been running a pair of 295's Nvidia's closest equivalent and I have to run it on XP 64 in order to get all 4 cards to run without playing all sorts of games to try and trick the OS.

I was hoping it would be fixed with Windows 7 but no such luck. I bet those 5970's will produce some awesome numbers. I designed and ordered a whole new system just to crunch and it included a pair of 5970's but they were back ordered and I finally gave up and changed it to 3 5870's and after many unrelated set backs finally got it up and running full time this week and it is producing ridiculous numbers right now. I actually came here looking to find out why I can't run Collatz without my computer freezing using the ATI cards, as it works great on Milkyway, 600,000-700,000/day currently.

I changed the 2 5970's to 3 5870's and it has shipped and should arrive tomorrow or the next day.

Thanks for the advice.

my MB has 6 pci-e16's and is good for crossfire and sli with the 1,3,5 slots allowing 3 full 16 lanes.

I might switch to the new GTX 300 version of cards when they come out and move the others around or swap-out the 295's for 395's if there ever is one. I have a BFG GTX260 at the moment not even running

I still have not decided what to do exactly but the cards are starting to appear the Toronto area currently and if I drove a car I could grab the pair of 5970's I was seeking, but my initial excitement about getting dual 5970's has worn off I think that I probably do what has been suggested and grab a pair of 5870's and test out the overclocking capabilities (I run my pair of 295's overclocked by 22%)but I would probably change some other components as well. I am looking to get an XFX Card as they offer a lifetime warranty on their cards and it can be transferred to the new owner when if you sell them. they have a stock version at $430 or the XXX Edition for $499 with the 5970's I found costing $715 so the two stock cards would cut the system price by $600

MSI has showed these new killer 5870's off a few day's ago for release next month but no price was announced

MSI’s flagship enthusiast-catered accomplishment comes in the form of the Radeon R5870 Lightning based on the 40nm “Cypress” DirectX 11 core from AMD. This particular GPU is built on a 10-layer printed circuit board and features a jaw-dropping 1000MHz core speed, a 15-phase digital PWM design and two 8-pin PCI-Express 2.0 power connectors for incredible overclocking capability and performance. In addition, the card incorporates the company’s latest and greatest in heatsink innovation which it calls “Twin Frozr II thermal design with SuperPipe technology.”

The Twin Frozr II design is equipped with two large 8cm fans, 5 heatpipes, and high-density fins to effectively dissipate heat from the GPU core, memory chips and PWM area. MSI even states that the board is applied with “Military Class” components – SSC, Hi-c Capacitors, and Solid Capacitors – making the Radeon R5870 Lightning the best choice for maximum overclocking.

Thanks for the help

I placed an order for a new custom computer with 2 5970's in it specifically to run collatz but now find I face an indefinite wait that could be very long and while the system won't ship until the cards arrive, will I still want to use the same MB,RAM, Case etc possible 6 or more weeks from now. How much of a difference will it make to the systems RAC, if I install 3 5870's instead of 2 5970's as I can get those today and save $150 as well, but it is more a case of will I still be Happy with the numbers after getting pumped about getting a pair of the very best and spending Months trying to figure out how to pay for it. If I end up waiting a long time I will then worry about the new Nvidia's Cards that are all ready month overdue for release and while off even now, coming out a few weeks later and blowing mine out of the water. I know this is and has always been a never ending problem for Gamers, and I am having trouble, but I don't care what my frame rate is as I have simply am not a video game user, unless you count my last game system and it was an Atari running such favorites as PAC-MAN and Missile Command, all I care about iS Giga Flops.

Could some Ati 5870 and 5970 share their systems number for me I have tried doing it myself but it usually says how only how many 5800's a system has.
9) Message boards : Number crunching : WU not validating? (Message 4354)
Posted 2961 days ago by schizo1988
Being aware of it I have found on many projects means very little, fortunately here when you are told they are aware of a problem and are on top of getting it fixed you know they mean it and something will be done quickly and even more important you are kept informed of how things are progressing in most cases and any snags they may have run into so you are not in the dark.

The other thing and I will say it again is the fact that you are allowed to have a large enough queue to ride out a reasonably lengthy server problem, I have 2 GTX 295's and I am fairly certain I am allowed to have 600 GPU WU's. I ran out of patience with Milkyway, as I was usually only running one project and would run out of jobs and then have to find a new project to crunch until they were able to send more WU's.

That and people do need to sleep and get downtime themselves and I have no idea what it takes to run something like this but I am sure there are not enough hours in the day to implement all the upgrades they would like to do.

Keep it up

I hope to be bringing another new system to the project but it will take awhile as I looking for a pair of 5970's and I think the back-order wait times are getting quite long so I better at least order the cards and worry about the MB,etc a month from now when I might get the cards. While I am hyped about these new cards I am still really more excited by what Nvidia is going to release to beat it, it will be a monster. Since the switch over to GPU's from CPU's I have become hooked, it worse than being a Hard Core Gamer, at least they realistically limit themselves to one High Power System at a time, and they would hate me I have never played any games on my systems.

Posted 2962 days ago by schizo1988
I think it is just a matter of waiting as I have piles of WU's pending and waiting to be validated, how many have two results reported I don't know as I typically have over 250 jobs in pending status at any given time. The oldest currently, was submitted Nov 18th with the second result submitted Dec. 2, but as far as I know I always get credited eventually, but it takes time, I have at least 200,000 credits pending right now, and usually do.

The backlog must be huge when you can't access the server to report and get new jobs for a prolonged period of time which has happened a few times lately. Last time I ran out of GPU jobs and had something like 688 jobs sitting waiting to be reported by the time the server was accepting connections for reporting and getting new WU's but the actual file uploaded when the job completes was uploading. At least I am allowed to keep a large number of jobs in my queue, some projects really limit them and when they go down you run out quickly and end up moving back and forth to other projects Milkyway did this to me all the time.

A stock ATI 5970 is capable of 4.64TFLOPs and the card is unlocked and shown to have great overclocking potential and can apparently have the clock speed increased from 725mhz to the 850mhz of the 5870 which is rated at 2.72TFLOPs, so if you double that it could do 5.44TFLOPS. Put a pair of these in a machine and without even considering the CPU, you could be approaching 11 TFLOPS so less than 100 computers could reach a PetaFlop

I get the same message periodically, but when it tries again it downloads the WU's just fine. Why it gives that message I have no idea but like I said it doesn't seem to listen to itself. as I have no problems keeping my personal queue full, of Cuda Jobs, just keep trying to get jobs
13) Message boards : Number crunching : Problems with a GTX295 (Message 3653)
Posted 2987 days ago by schizo1988
I got sick and tired of my graphics driver crashing constantly and causing the majority of the jobs run on my pair of 295's that I went and reinstalled Windows XP 64 bit and the problem is gone.

My 260 was earning over 30,000 credits/day and the 295's were only doing about 65,000/day, now I can finish a GPU job in about 25 minutes and so I can complete 8 jobs an hour and they earn a little over 700 credits each so if I leave it to just crunch I should be able to run 200 jobs/day and earn 135-140,000.

But I have some cash available at the moment something that never happens but I ended up being owed 8 months of back payments on my Disability Pension when my status changed and my monthly payment went from $779 to $1020/month so I received a check for $1900 a few months ago and I am slowly pissing it away on nothing. With my income, saving up enough to do a computer upgrade is almost impossible, so I am think about striking while I can, that and I can't stop thinking about the new 5800 series ATI just brought out, a pair of 5850's is only $600 CAN, but I would need to move the Nvidia 260 into the same machine, so the Motherboard will cost a bit extra, but I have a ton of parts to use up and get rid of, I want to streamline to just 2 machines and leave it there for a long long time, I have a Q6600 I could use but doubt I will be able to find a board that does what I want and can use it.

I ended up moving from vista to XP for a long time to get it to see both cards, so going back to it now is not a big deal, at least it works.
