1) Message boards : Number crunching : MAC OS X 32-bit CUDA App (Message 9538)

A million THANK YOUs zombie67!! You have no idea how long I've tried to get the GPU working for a BOINC project on my mac! Going back to CUDA 3.0 worked! No other CUDA mac app works (Milkyway@home has no GPU WUs and einstein@home needs more vram than 256mb).

I notice that the GPU task is processing far more quickly than the CPU ones. It's showing a completion time of 133hrs for the CPU task and just 17hrs for the GPU. Are they the same work units or different? Is the GPU just that much better?

Workunit size is exactly the same. In fact, the work generator has no idea whether it will run on Windows, OS/X, or Linux. Nor does it know whether it will run on CPU, ATI, or CUDA. The algorithm used for each application is the same as well.

That being said, the estimates are probably quite a bit off. They are calculated using the stock application on a PIII 800Mhz box's FLOPS ratings and the app actually uses all integer math, so its a little like apples and oranges. I'm guessing that since the GT 300M is an overclocked GT 240, that the time will be less than 3 hours for the GPU as a GT 120 can finish a WU in under 4 hours. You i5 CPU won't take nearly 133 hours either, especially since it is running a 64-bit operating system (e.g. x86 assembly increases performance by a factor of 2 and a 64-bit operating system by another factor of 2). My guess for a CPU WU is maybe 12 hours.

Thanks for that. I'm considering just using the GPU in future since it is so much more efficient at processing WUs than the CPU. I never knew GPUs would be this good. Now why don't they just make CPUs like they do GPUS? :D

Seriously, I'd get more done quicker by using the GPU alone.

Collatz GPU work units are not working for me...any ideas? I have the CUDA 3.1.14 and toolkit 3.1 installed on the new Macbook Pro. I keep getting the "output file collatz_xxxx_xxxx absent" error.

Any ideas to get this working?
4) Message boards : Macintosh : how to run CUDA on a mac book pro? (Message 9442)

To run Collatz, you will need to install both the CUDA toolkit and the CUDA drivers and a recent version of BOINC (v6.10.43 is the latest). Anything prior to 6.10.21 probably won't work without creating symbolic links to the CUDA libraries.

Hi,

I am having the same error as reported above. I have a 2010 Macbook Pro and have installed the CUDA 3.1 toolkit and 3.1 drivers. Still I can't use the GPU.

Any ideas?
