1) Message boards : Number crunching : Why are my "pending" credits growing exponentially? (Message 10228)

Now up to 26 pages of "pending validation"... How long does one have to wait to have their WUs validated??? this system is nearly a month behind...

The two outer cards run between 60 and 64C

The two inner cards run around 88 to 90C

Fan speeds for the two inner cards are 3130 to 3150

The title of the tread pretty much sums it up...

RAC is dropping, my overall credit barely changes every day, and 5 ATI 5870s keep churning away 24X7.

I'm running 4 5870s side by side on an MSI 790FX-GD70

They run hot enough at stock so I have not bothered to tweak for faster crunching and even higher temps...

Are you using water cooling in that thing? Good lord 4 5870's in one machine, you must be the one gobbling up all the credits. Be careful PoorBoy will be after you!

Straight air... nothing fancy... Bread-boarding the rig with 120mm fans on the back and sides. Summer temps are over so I have no issues with ambient air being too hot...

My 4 ATI 5870s are smacking WU in 5 to 11 minutes depending on the WU. Any card less than that and you are pretty much just wasting electricity...

Faster cards use more power than slower cards, especially within the same generation. At 11 minutes a 5870 with almost 190 watts max. draw would be about 3 times faster than an older 4670 (about 30-35 minutes) which has about 60 watts max. draw, or less than one-third the power usage. Just because a card is very fast does not necessarily mean that slower cards are "wasting electricity."

Even if I agreee with your figure of 190 watts max draw (ATI says 188) and mine are drawing less than that ATI posted max draw figure. I get more WU done in any given time frame. The math actually works out to 163% more efficient than your 60 watt card. With 4 5870s... if I run for just 30 days- you have to keep running for another 120 days to equal my WU output...

But the current price is around 400 dollars PER CARD, you could get 3 5770's for the same price. I just checked and your 4 5870's are pumping out 613,738.11 RAC right now, on one machine. That averages out to only 153,434.5275 per card. My single 5770 is pumping out 160,418.21. That means my card is getting a better RAC than yours, I think your statement has some flaws. This NOT a 'mine is better than yours' conversation, this is a WHY is mine better than yours conversation. Mine is at DNETC, yours is here at Collatz, is that the difference? We are both running AMD quad cores, your is an AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 955 Processor, while mine is an AMD Phenom(tm) 9850 Quad-Core Processor and we are both running Win7 64 bit. I also run PrimeGrid, cpu only, on mine, what else do you run on yours.

If you are not running Collatz then how can you possibly make a valid comparision to what my cards are doing? If I look at the Top Hosts on Collatz I don't see ANY 5770s in the top 20 or the top 40 or the top 60 and not until #67 do we find a ATI 5770... Please tell me how that single 5770 is kicking my ass. For the record you can't just look at RAC and divide by 4... I have not hit my "peak" RAC with the 4 cards... I only got the 4th card working on June 30th...

A year ago there were only two AMD mobos that supported 4 PCI-e rails. I have both and the other is the Foxconn Destroyer 1.

The currant RAC is now 621K and it is still climbing... KIll-a-watt reports 747 watts with 4 cards at 97% and the Quad core at 100%.

My top RAC with 3 5870s was 522K. I should make almost 700K on a single machine...

I'm running 3 5870s side by side...

At their peak my RAC was 522K for the day.

I have not bothered with overclocking as the heat is tolerable as is. OCing would just be pushing the limit and courting certain hardware disaster.

I do have PCIx riser cards that may allow adding a 4th 5870 to the mix.

Use a PCIe riser card... you can find them out of China... for around $20 US.

My 5870 4-way rig is only using 624 watts at full load (including CPU)... Granted the 4th 5870 is not recognized by BOINC (Device Manager sees it just fine) at this point in time but it is plugged in and drawing some power...

My 3 5870s are currently completing 3 WUs every 5.35 minutes... I don't even bother with a case... makes it much simpler to setup and maintain. Waiting for a CoolerMaster UPC 1100w PS to arrive for the 4th 5870...

No to the 5970s but yes to 3 5870s.

I could not get a stable system on the Foxconn Destroyer under Win7 x64. The 2nd PS caused all 3 and then 4 VC fans to run at 100%

Swapped the 3 5870s to my MSI 790FX-GD70 and all was well. It did take some time for BOINC to get up to speed. Waiting for a CoolerMaster UPC 1100w PS to install the 4th 5870...

Peak wattage with 3 5870s is only 625 watts measured by a Kill-a-watt meter.
