Error: (-54)Invalid work group size at 1692 of RunSteps

work group size is related to sieve_size and threads. Try setting threads=6 and sieve_size=20 in the collatz_sieve config file(s). If that works, increase one or the other by 1 and run the next WUs. Keep increasing by 1 until it fails or video response is poor and then back it off by 1. Then do the same with the other one. Make sure you have verbose=1 set as well so that you can review the times and settings in the output.

I did. Let's see what happens. (Fingers crossed?)

Nope, It didn't work.

Did you reboot after installing the c++ runtimes? Could you add the line verbose=1 to the collatz_sieve config file(s)? That will give a little more information. My hunch is that the sieve size may need to be reduced. At least that's one possibility. The error is basically access denied when trying to write to a memory location. So either it isn't allocating the memory and thus can't write to it, or it is occurring somewhere else.

I did a reboot after installing the runtimes (I reboot both machines at least once every 24h).

I assume the "verbose=1" goes to both the 32- & 64-bit files, so I'm adding it to both.

@mikey

I know all this stuff already (I'm one of the "privileged" ones to join SETI back in 1999 when it was a standalone .exe, not to mention my experience as computer user/programmer/... even before IBM's PC).

I don't want to install BOINC on multiple Windows installations, it's useless. My main machine I'm using writing this, has 2 Windows installations plus 2 more partitions on that disk (not to mention the other 2 disks). 1 partition is called "Downloads" as a temporary place when I use my download manager to download stuff like new versions of drivers, programs, etc. When I boot to any installation that partition always has the same letter (as do all the others). If I install Win 7 on that 2nd installation & boot to it that "Downloads" partition will get a completely different letter now, so I'll have to hunt down that partition for that staff I downloaded for Win 7.

As far as the PCIE - 3.0 slots & the drivers:

"Don't fix it, if it ain't broken", I know. One reason for the multiple installations was that: 1 for games & the 2nd for BOINC, Internet, etc.
So I could upgrade the software on 1 installation & leave the other (BOINC) unchanged. Only the PCIE - 2.0 slots would be a problem for that particular use of Windows. And for those 'fancy dancy new state or the art drivers' some tweaks are not only for games but for video/photograph quality, whatever.

I'll install Win 7/2008 x64 on the 2nd machine (used for BOINC & P2P) and see how it'll go (BOINC- & GPU-wise). And then see what to do with my main machine.

Thanks for the input (& your thoughts).

Due to Win XP being 12 years old now, AMD dropped OpenCL support a while ago (maybe 12.1 drivers? (a.k.a. yymm or 2012/January). In general, the laptop/desktop vendor's drivers are always the bare minimum and don't often contain the CAL or OpenCL DLLs that the vidio card vendor's drivers do. In other words, if you want OpenCL for AMD GPUs your best bet is to download the drivers directly from AMD and not from the laptop or desktop manufacturers sites. Think about it. If you wanted the best CPU drivers for your Intel CPU, would you find them at ASUS or Intel?

First of all those cards are PCIE - 3.0 expansion cards, not integrated on the M/B (though both my M/Bs are PCIE - 2.0, 1156 socket). As you're probably aware the manufacturers give what INTEL has on their site for a particular chipset - usually a reference driver. It's not always the case for standalone graphics cards. And if you want to use the extras from that particular card manufacturer the AMD/ATI drivers won't do it, because that extra program will complain about the driver not being from that particular card manufacturer. I did it with an ASUS card (the 4550 or the XT1xxx, I don't remember; even AMD/ATI's driver warns you that your card is not from ATI/AMD & won't probably have all the features from the card manufacturer detected/enabled/whatever).

The other problem with Win 7/2008 (and most likely with 8.x/2012) is the way they multiboot. Instead of keeping the drive letters as they appear on the first installation in Windows Explorer, if you boot the 2nd, 3rd, etc. installation it becomes the c: drive even if that installation is on an extended partition, or worst, on a 2nd, 3rd, etc. drive & all the other partitions/disks get completely different letters from those assigned by the 1st installation.

Also if you want to use specific GPUs and not others on BOINC, I would highly suggest reading about the BOINC client configuration opions.

I know. My cc_config.xml:

<cc_config>
<log_flags>
<sched_op_debug>1</sched_op_debug>
</log_flags>
<options>
<ignore_ati_dev>0</ignore_ati_dev>
</options>
</cc_config>

which I wrote because of those 2 new cards but cannot test it at the moment plus the other files because of the OpenCL issue.

You can see a chart here:
http://www.hal6000.com/seti/boinc_ati_gpu_cheat_sheet.htm of where AMD drivers dropped their XP support. At the bottom of the page there you can download the different drivers, both older ones and upto the latest release version. NO links to test versions are on that page though.

I've already read that page but I hoped someone had different info for those 2 cards (which are too new(ish), 10/13 - according to Wikipedia), sort of "insider trading" so to speak.

Thanks any way.

I have both an ASUS R7 240X (2GB) & a Gigabyte R7 260X (1GB). Do you guys know if there is OpenCL for WinXP for these cards or is a >=Vista thing? Gigabyte doesn't even have a driver for that card in the Downloads section. Asus does, but says nothing on the contents of the download. The drivers CD for each card doesn't even have OpenCL for Windows 7/8.x, let alone WinXP. The only OpenCL I can find for these cards is from AMD but for Win 7/8.x. I don't want to install Win 7 on my 2 machines and not having BOINC recognize the cards.

I want to offload GPU processing from my ASUS 4550 & Sapphire 6450 to those newer cards & leave the older ones free for other things. And I want to use the newer cards for other projects as well because of the double precision feature e.g. MilkyWay.

Any help/thoughts greatly appreciated.

That's great. The 6450 finished the WU & has been validated (Run time:40,471.83, CPU time:312.16) & now it got 2 more WUs which will complete in 12h each.

I have to wait for the 4550 to finish.

So far so good.

Update:

v 6.04 works on my HD4550 card as well!!!!!!! albeit a bit slower (59+h instead of the 57+h on the 6450 - which I guess is normal). I'll have to play with the solo config on both machines when they'll finish I think. So far so good. Fingers crossed:)

Happy Valentine's Slicker & the rest.

What about the R7 240(x)/260(x)? Because I'm thinking of buy one of each for my two machines as 2ary cards for BOINC projects (not only for Collatz, since they both have double precision) & they are cheap (~€200 both).

PS The subject should read R9 instead of R2......:)

I added a new opencl_amd_gpu version (v6.04) for Windows x86 which I'm hoping will work for you.

You're the man!!!!! Thanks Slicker. It's only at 0.5xx% (just downloaded) at the moment, so fingers crossed.

It'll finish in 57 1/2h, so I guess I'll have to play with the solo config file.
I see from depends.exe that you changed the OS & Subsystem version, so I assume I was correct about what version of Windows the exe needed.

Thanks again.

PS. I'll try it on my other machine with the ASUS HD4550 (the one I'm posting this) & see what will happen:)

When you told me about the TeamViewer and other VNC progs., I told you that it was running as service because I was using MS RDP & the only version for that was 6.12.34. As you can see from the Events log it's version 7.0.64 now & NOT running as a service. It's a fresh install of Windows & using TeamViewer to access the machine now. What are the "hard/soft ware" requirements? Do I need to put the params in the "Optimizing Collatz 4.07 Applications" & other threads in the solo_collatz_6.03_windows_intelx86__opencl_amd_gpu.config file? Do I need the app_info.xml? And I did reset (not remove) the program.
What about the missing DLLs required for the nVidia cards? Both my machines have ATI cards.

(As a side note I tried installing the Intel OpenCL for CPU but it didn't install because it encountered an error. What the error was? Ask those ***holes at Intel. My guess is that it doesn't install on Socket 1156 mobos. From the output of clinfo.exe the CPU is using the AMD OpenCL & I'll have to upgrade to BOINC >=v7.2.21.)

Thanks for the help so far.

A number of volunteers are returning results with the error: "couldn't start app: CreateProcess() failed - (unknown error)". This is due to a missing Microsoft C++ Runtime library required by the nVidia OpenCL DLLs. The MSVC Runtimes are available from Microsoft at
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30679 or from here for 32-bit or 64-bit hosts.

Does this error occur only on nVidia cards? Because I'm getting this error on both machines using an ASUS HD4550 & on the other a Sapphire HD6450.
What Windows version does solo_collatz needs? depends.exe says OS version 6.0 whereas for SETI (Lunatics version) says OS version 4.0

Thanks for the TeamViewer tip.

A Windows ATI (CAL/Brook+) app was successfully compiled under VS2012 and is currently being tested so AMD HD 2400 thru HD 47xx GPUs will be able to participate.

Any news on that front?

According to CPUID CPU-Z utility the i3-540 supports SSE4.2.

My other machine has the same CPU (but different mobo) and has the 6450 from Sapphire but the BOINC version is 6.12.34 - the last version to run as a service (that machine is accessed through MS RDP - no monitor or K/B or mouse). No luck there either I suppose (I'm getting the message that the BOINC client is too old).

The 4550 does support OpenCL with the driver from ASUS according to GPU-Z, but if I install a newer version from ASUS there's no OpenCL anymore.

The new Collatz doesn't require double precision on the GPU, does it?

I guess it's time to buy a new GPU. :) :(
