1) Message boards : Number crunching : Optimizing Collatz Sieve (Message 23702)

Thanks for the info. My GTX Titans take 40-45 minutes to complete one task using.
<app_config>
<app>
<name>collatz_sieve</name>
<max_concurrent>2</max_concurrent>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>1.0</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.5</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
</app_config>

I will try your settings and see if I can get back down to 8-10 minutes as they used to run before they changed the run times to be longer.
My GTX 1080 cards with the same settings about take about 12 minutes.
My AMD 290X were good running cards to but now take 20 minutes and before the change they took less the 6 minutes to complete.

I ran 2 Tasks Per GPU all last year with the above times but now you really cannot do this anymore, What a Bummer.

Where do I put this at?

verbose=0
kernels_per_reduction=48
threads=8
lut_size=17
sleep=0
cache_sieve=1
reduce_cpu=0
sieve_size=30

@EG - good stuff!

However, in tune with Slicker's request to differentiate by more than just color, there are other images of the Collatz fractal that could be used in conjuction, such as this one:

This picture came from Nathaniel Johnson in a post The Collatz Conjecture as a Fractal where there are several other iterations where pieces of the fractals could be used as the center figure to provide a visual difference between badges or levels of badges.

Just a thought,
g

It is good stuff only if you are not color blind and that was why they started using US Army Ranks for Badges.
Then my question I why would a color blind person even be running this project or running Fractal Programs. Meaning they would not see all and even I would not see all. We cannot see all the colors of the world. Please go back the older style Badges that EG created for us.

How do we make sure that our Team "EVGA DC Captains" account is not removed and deleted. The Account manages all of our BOINC Projects.

Funny that it is this one for me because I retired with this rank. SFC or Sergeant First Class E7.

I do not think it was a wise move on your part only because they are US Army Ranks and users around the world run this project.

What was wrong with the older badges?

Found that you need vcredist_x86 12 or higher so I installed 12 and 15 both x64 and x86
Windows 10 Pro X64 only has vcredist 10 x86 & x64

New Install of Windows 10 and all my Task: Error while computing
I did an in-place update on another computer and have no issues on AMD R2 290X.
Using Driver 368.81 on 4 GTX 980 Cards with SLI Disabled.
Any Help would be great.

This is my AMD Rig:
I wanted to test between NVIDIA Cards and AMD or ATI Cards not sure what to call them.

Still have a LOT of Testing to do on all the Projects.

Now my GTX 690's are running well.

Looking good :)

Looks like a few older ones in there finishing off, but the three newer ones look to be in the "ball park" for that GPU.

I would keep the CPU at 0.5, leave yourself some slack, don't try and squeeze in a CPU WU or two, that's cutting it too fine.

When I was working with chf1949 we found that running 6 GPU with 0.5 CPU was quite enough for the beast, any more started to have a marked effect on the GPU WUs - and he runs 7970s.

Do PM him later on tonight, he will respond - maybe tomorrow if he is not on tonight - your needs are the same, and not many here run 6xGPU in a box.

I will, thanks.
Not many believe me when I say I say I have 3 GTX 690 in One Computer. Here is a photo:

I am on Water so the Temps should be ok.
After I changed the name to large_collatz I got a 1 CPU to 1 GPU.
Setting the Config file to 3 to see if that sets them to .5
I did have to restart my PC for this to work.

Thanks for all your help with this.

OK

Show this <name>solo_collatz</name> be
<name>large_collatz</name>

I would like to set each of the 6 GPU to use .5 or higher.

Two things to check:

First
Have a look inside:

C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\boinc.thesonntags.com_collatz

for (yours will be slightly different, I am AMD):

large_collatz_6.04_windows_x86_64__opencl_amd_gpu.CONFIG

file extension maybe slightly different - but you are looking for a very long filename similar to mine above.

Is it blank inside? There should be config details along the lines of:

verbose=1
items_per_kernel=22
kernels_per_reduction=9
threads=8
sleep=1

If it is blank, put those lines in with Notepad, watch the file extension on saving, don't save as .txt file.

With six GPUs running, probably best to run with kernel = 21 to start with, if then ok change to 22.

Second
Irrespective of what you find in the file above, the CPU setting should be changed from 0.01 to at least 0.25, 0.5 would be ideal. The application needs lots of CPU support. It maybe that NVidia cards can get along with less - not sure, I am AMD - but as far as I know its true for both AMD and NVidia.

Using the classic setting of 0.01 will slow it down horribly

Thanks,
I did set the file but still only see 0.01 on each 6 projects now running.
I have to wait until my other CPU projects complete and then I will see if it get any better with running only GPU Projects. Somehow some collatz CPU Projects started up even though I have them turned off, as I only run collatz on my GPUs.

verbose=1
items_per_kernel=21
kernels_per_reduction=9
threads=8
sleep=1

Let it run - that's a BOINC "quirk"

Its extremely hard, impossible frankly (for the BOINC app) to take new applications and predict accurately from get go because of the vast different numbers of cards, applications, machines, operating systems blah blah - cant be done.

So it goes right back to a dead safe guess, and over time the prediction gets better as it uses your card to extrapolate. If you watch the counter closely it will speed round quickly jumping chunks of time as it gets into what you have.

Meanwhile, look at the left number - time completed to date - take that value, take the percentage done, then extrapolate both to 100%, thats pretty accurate after around 10-20% done.

Meanwhile ignore the right hand "time remaining" figure .....

Even after 4 and 5 Hours?
Even the Elapsed time is incorrect!
