1) Message boards : Number crunching : What changed? Downloading CPU tasks.. (Message 6649)

I think Aqua is now allowing dual cores to do the AQUA wus. They also boosted the credit on those little fokkers a while ago to encourage people to crunch them as well.

Yep that I am all too aware of.... being that I still hold the #1 spot there with fat lead that is dwindling quickly thanks to me loosing over 50% of my CPU power -

But those changes were just recently.

Thanks :)

Strange,

I could not figure it out, it was downloading CPU WU's no matter what I did..
I had only a couple of hosts doing this.
But it was only doing on the hosts with nVidea cards, not on any of the hosts running with ATI..

So..

I detached and reattached and so far it looks good -

Any idea's why this would have occurred?

Really messes things up when you have a dual core and you fool BOINC to thinking it has 4 cores so it can run Aqua..

Go ahead, give it a shot, run 4 CPU Collatz tasks simultaneous on a dual core Talk about choking !! But it is better than running 4 RSA or PrimeGrid Seventeen or Bust WUs :) At least it was 64 bit OS

Today I noticed that my nVidea hosts have started to download CPU tasks....(I have not checked my ATI hosts)
I have not had this problem in many many moons.

Has something changed?

I check my prefs and they are the same.. No CPU please.
it really is annoying

Between the devil and the deep sea.

Kevin, do you really think what you write ?

If yes: a man is as old as he feels.

That exactly because of this, I don't want to crunch for a project.

Next week, you can add some ads for powder machine or ...

It's never too late to mend.

Merry advertising see you, well I don(t know...

Are you really as retarded as you sound ?? Or you have just lost your sense of humor? Ether way, why do you speak without understanding the comment in its context?

Now go away and taunt me no more

Please

Thanks!!

Hm... I guess you've already tried a simple reset of the project?

Yup,

reset

detach

stood on head in corner of the room

jumped up and down ..

I am going to uninstall the whole damn thing and start over :)

Seems that the ones giving me the problems more than anything are the 1 gig cards.
I did not notice that until just this very second..

Does not make sense that 1 gig cards would have this issue - they use the same drivers.. have the same ddr5 memory, same speeds ..

etc etc

9.10 is not one that I have tried.

I guess I can give that a shot and see what gives..

THX

EDIT: No go: this is the message I get with 9.10

11/25/2009 16:34:14|Collatz Conjecture|Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks

I don't have this problem with 9.2 but 9.2 gives my GPU heartburn.

IMO
Someone needs to fix the server.... something strange on the server side ?? just asking.

This may have been discussed elsewhere, if so forgive. I have searched the message boards but did not get an answer to this:

Ok so here is the deal.

BOINC 6.10.18 or 6.10.19 or 6.10.anything
Win-64, and a couple of my win-32 boxes.

ATI 4870

When running CAL 9.2 I keep getting VPU recover, and the WU's stop crunching.

When running with 8.12 no such problem, BUT.. Get this message, and no WU's will download.

Running stock - no app...xml file.

You may as well give it up Rene, a Lamb should never walk into a Wolfs Den & expect to come out Alive ... ;)

Maybe I already did Poorboy... I'm going to lick my wounds, poor myself some coffee, jump on my Harley and meet with the other lambs in the bikers-bar.

Was nice talking to you all...

;-)

Now see there ya go!! -

Pissing me off all over again. ;) Because all I have is a couple of rotten apples when compared to your Harley!
I only have a couple of Cow's nice enough but certainly not a HOG!

Nice choice on machines for sure!!

Now if you are retarded enough to start comparing GPU grid, you are loosing it. because. GPU grid was designed AS a GPU project. While Collatz and MW are CPU projects with optimized GPU apps.
And as such, 1 WU= fixed credit amount, if that WU can be done faster on a GPU over a CPU(benchmark tested against the rusted grail or SETI) then it should gain more credit for doing more work.

Equal pay for equal work. Period.

If you don't think you are getting paid enough for your efforts, then the fault is yours, not the projects. Or if you feel you might be getting paid too much for your efforts, then you really are a retard.

I'm not going to reply to this post, because I'm finding it offending to say the least. I'm not name calling anyone.

And I am not going to reply to your reply :) LMAO!

But I think if you had understood the post, there was no name calling, you just happen to take it personal. I did say "IF" did I not?
Your response would indicate the "poor me" syndrome. As in "Poor me, I don't have an orange, all I have are rotten apples"

- no relation to Poorboy, because he happens to have a bucket full of oranges.

To me it's kinda like comparing an apple with an orange.

Hence why I think some adjustment might be needed.

;-)

You are right,

You are crunching with rotten apples, we are crunching with awesome oranges.
The only adjustment that needs to be made is for you to toss out the rotten apples and get a orange.

No adjustment (unless it is upwards, to match what MW is doing) need to be applied.

Period.

Just tried poking around in the high credits here.

Again, you are wrong.

Credits here are not high.

They are calculated via CPU for a benchmark. The most standard OS Win-32

If you crunch CPU with WIN-32 you will see just how high and out of line the credit situation here really is. I think after a few WU's you would be better off crunching uFluids or Malaria because I am almost certain that Collatz would grant lower credit/hr.

It just so happens that a third party has developed ATI and GPU code and made it available for everyone to use. It is an optimized app, and therefore plays no roll in the baseline credit comparison charts.

Understand it or not, that is the way it is.

If anyone here thinks that credit is paying too high, you are more than welcome to not participate, nobody is forcing you to be here.

Reminds me of the guy that told his boss he was making too much money and please could he have his wages cut in half.. oh, wait, I have never heard that before. Only in BOINC do we hear such absurdities. some socialistic point of view that everyone should be paid equal... donkey doodoo.

In a free market society, those that want to get the work done hire the big hitters with more pay. Last time I checked, we lived in such a society.

Hello Crunch3r and all,

I think redgoldendragon is refering to the project RAC at this moment.
Yesterday Collatz was no.1 with Seti on no.2
Here at Collatz there are far less hosts and somehow we (yes I'm including myself) managed to overrise all projects.

Did you consider the fact that 1: MW has been down, and 2: Collatz has had trouble,, and yesterday's credit could have been a combination of credit building up over the past few days of downtime ?

Probably not because it is easier to just start jumping up and down screaming about too many credits.

Nobody is forcing anyone to participate in high paying projects, if you think you are being paid too much, then run away and go to another project that pays you what you think you deserve.

If you want less Credit there's a whole Bunch of other Projects that will give it to you
...

Yes I know... ;-)

I sounds strange someone complaining about getting to much, but I've been around for a while now and I have never seen such an amount of given credits.

Yes I can see you have been around for awhile... are you counting in dog years ??

Go crunch uFluids or Malaria.

Forgive me if this has already been brought up, but credits here are fixed and are determined by a bench mark low end machine.. so if you like low credits. Just run CPU on WIN-32 here and you should be just happy about what you get.

Well if you want to crunch Collatz, recommend you upgrade to BOINC 6.10.xx and the new CUDA drivers for your card.

Otherwise you may have issues.

It will only take a few minutes to download and upgrade.

If you still have issues after the upgrade then let us know.
18) Message boards : Number crunching : your BOINC client is old - please install ... (Message 1862)
Posted 3042 days ago by Profile kevint
Maybe there is version setting on the server somewhere that, if higher than the client, tells it to complain about the client version. Now to find it...

This was the problem that I was having on many of my boxes.

See This Thread

There was NO WAY to download work until I upgraded to 6.10...

It made me crazy!!! I was running some with CPU and some with ATI/GPU-anon platform, and still got the message.

Eventually I caved and upgraded and work started to download. But it was not what I really wanted to do, I don't trust 6.10.xxx yet.
19) Message boards : Number crunching : BOINC 6.10.x (Message 1441)
Posted 3046 days ago by Profile kevint

I think they introduced with one of the later 6.6.(26?) versions, that only the GPUs with the highest capabilities are used. To override that you have to edit the cc_config. xml and add the option:

<use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>

That should restore the old behaviour.

Thanks that fixed it.

But it does not answer why the other boxes are working after the upgrade and not this one..
Strange..

What a dumb idea - this function SHOULD be available through the GUI just like the use # of CPU's function is.
What a bunch of DA's....
20) Message boards : Number crunching : BOINC 6.10.x (Message 1431)
Posted 3046 days ago by Profile kevint
I have several boxes with multiple GPU's
And this one was working just fine with 6.6 -
I upgraded to 6.10.5

and now only 1 GPU is working.
I am getting this message..

How do I get BOINC to use the other GPU.

9/19/2009 10:40:31||NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GTX 260 (driver version 19038, CUDA version 2030, compute capability 1.3, 896MB, est. 96GFLOPS)
9/19/2009 10:40:31||NVIDIA GPU 1 (not used): GeForce 9800 GTX/9800 GTX+ (driver version 19038, CUDA version 2030, compute capability 1.1, 512MB, est. 84GFLOPS)

*** EDIT **

Even after completely uninstalling BOINC, deleting the entire directory structure, re-installing the nVidea drivers.

Still getting the same message.

I don't have this problem on any of my other boxes...

But it is the only box that I am running GTX 260 and 9800GTX... my other boxes have matching GPU's.,.. more or less.
