1) Message boards : Unix/Linux : Ubuntu 12.04 amd64 : Computation error (Message 13886)
Posted 2088 days ago by frankhagen
Since the update/upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (available since 27 April 2012), mini_collatz 2.02 is returning all work unit as computation error.

same over here at numerous projects:

definitely not a collatz-problem..
2) Message boards : Number crunching : Multi-Threaded Collatz App (Message 12631)
Posted 2365 days ago by frankhagen
Moo uses a multi-threaded app too and some people complain bitterly that they don't like it, me I don't much care as it seems to give me twice the credits while using twice the resources.

MOO (same goes for DNECT) is not using a native boinc app but the wrapper to run the distributed.net client. in fact this thing has a lot of the options people on the boinc-side would like, but currently there is no way to get boinc to use them.

Me three ;-)

I am making this unanimous, I WIN!!

Nope, I win.

you won..

WTF!

you just managed to escape that freaky thing chasing you.. ;)
5) Message boards : News : Database Error Repaired and New UPS Installed (Message 12420)
Posted 2423 days ago by frankhagen
Since the system was down to repair the database anyway, I installed the new UPS at the same time so hopefully all the power outage woes are behind us now.

well done!

probably you'd have been fine by simply replacing the batteries. so you might consider this and keep the old one in spare..
6) Message boards : Number crunching : Cuda 3.2 ili Cuda 4 app for Nvidia? (Message 12415)
Posted 2423 days ago by frankhagen
if you check the release notes:

http://developer.download.nvidia.com/compute/DevZone/docs/html/C/doc/CUDA_Toolkit_Release_Notes.txt

you'll see they have done a lot to improve FFT-speed.

if those other improvements will speed up simple math like 3x+1?

hard to tell - just give it a try..
7) Message boards : Number crunching : GPU compute capability list (Message 8752)

The 295 crunches each task in 31 minutes
The 280 crunches each task in 33 minutes

Anyone with similar results??

sounds a little slow - my GTS250 (800/1100) needs about 33 minutes using the 2.04 app...

BOINC does not to a good job with CPU vs. GPU scheduling.

in fact it does everything but the things we expect it to do.

Is it okay to drink ZOMBIES while I win??
;-p

that's okay - i'll stick to my bushmills 21.;)

The animal lovers will be happy to know that no deer were harmed by me during this weekend.

yeah, i do love them - my favorite form of them is BRATEN..

You won't lose them, it may take awhile but you'll get them eventually.

but it might take quite a while like this one:

12) Message boards : Number crunching : Are you ready? (Message 3581)
Posted 2988 days ago by frankhagen

Yep, MW will be down for some days and gpugrid doing some ati 4850+ testing.

Don't forget SETI ;)

I forgot SETI 4 Years ago ... :P

SET What...? :P

as for YETI i got another idea about a new credit system: credits granted for SOMETHING found. <roflmao>

I run the 5.10.45 client on a class of workstations -- any XP or 2000 workstation without a supported GPU. I have seen no payoff (and some downside) to moving into the 6.x client set for that combination.

me2 - not many projects around (except the GPU-ones) which require 6.xx.xx..

now i checked, and also found one:

Posted 2990 days ago by frankhagen
A reasonable position to take, as the work contributes to the science. It is only those 2.05 WU results that cannot be validated and cause the server problems that need the wrapping code to stop them. At least that is the way I understood your approach was aimed.y, these good 2.05 results will come in within days as the wingmen report, and the problem will be history.

this might take quite a while - my oldest pending result was reported on 13 Aug 2009 9:08:42 UTC..

Just to throw out some numbers, on MW a typical GPU reaches about 85% of efficiency (which is not exactly the ratio of peak flops, that's only ~70% ;), nvidia GPUs maybe even slightly more (the efficiency is not the problem, peak performance is). This compares to about 50% on a Core i7 (hyperthreading saves the day) and just about 35% on a typical CPU (all running the vectorized SSE3 version). The good thing with GPUs is that they offer you an effective instruction latency of just a single cycle for all operations when dealing with heavily compute bound parallel problems.

yup - but then there is the guy who's understanding ends where a flop is a flop.
and we all know there are apps around which use loads of them with oh so little progress - simply because they are using compilers which never where made for things like crunching..

and down again.. :((

about time to send those 2.05 results to the bin..
19) Message boards : Number crunching : Kick the Validator plz (Message 3377)
Posted 2995 days ago by frankhagen
If a certain user from "across the pond" who pronounces schedule without the 'k' sound, and who's name starts with "D" were to stop using the 2.05 ATI app, it would run much smoother. You'd think he'd get the hint after being emailed about his misconfigured host and also having at least a dozen of his results deleted and no credit given in the last couple days because they crashed the validator. I'm at the opint now where I'm kind of hoping he doesn't upgrade before Friday so that the validator will invalidate every WU he returns.

you could simply block him NOW..

Others already have a scheme which is low enough not to embarass SETI (ie Berkeley, ie DA).

i'm around for quite a while now, and this is the one and only cause i can see for this events.

anyone ever seen the krazy kredit kops complain about a project paying less than YETI?

how about paying credit for finding something? <beg>
